A large vintage 1960’s West German Pottery Vase from BAY KERAMIK. These vases in the Rimini Blu colours (first done by Bitossi) are really hard to find- I think this is the first one I’ve seen in Australia (I bought it in from Europe). Brown, tan, and orange are easy to find- red becomes harder- the blue and green ones are very difficult to get. This would look brilliant in a group display as shown in the photos. (This full group is available at the time of writing- all 4 vintage pieces would be $360.) The base of this piece is marked with the form number- 98-25. I love the artistic decoration of the piece. The raised decorative elements have an almost Egyptian-feel but the colours are in stark contrast giving it an oceanic quality. I feel as though I’m transported under the sea when I look at this one- seaweeds and waves- bubbles and simmering life. It was meant to go into an apartment near the beach that I was commissioned to renovate and style but unfortunately, I couldn’t find a spot for it. There are a lot of West German pots out there- not many like this though. And there’s a huge band of avid West German pottery collectors out there- with good reason. I think this piece is at least as appealing as Bitossi pottery (more in some ways).

Bay Keramik was started by Eduard Bay in 1933- this company is steeped in tradition. Some of their art production continued into the 1980s. They released a plethora of striking works during their 50-year history. Bay’s best-known designer was Bodo Mans and this piece is attributed to him.

The real beauty of owning retro pottery is knowing these hand-made pieces won’t be in vogue for a few years or even just one season before ending up as landfill- this piece has survived about 50 years already. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and our environment.
