Background Info and Provenance

(Written in 2021.)

A PAIR of cordial glasses by Bimini of Vienna, Austria (we currently have 6 glasses available all in excellent condition). They date to around 1930. The suite conjures up the set of Moulin Rouge for me- extravagant and risqué. These are incredible in their workmanship – I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything so expertly made. The glasses each weigh an AVERAGE of only 32 grams (they’re HAND-CRAFTED so the weights are not all identical for each). They are delicate and so fine in both make and appearance.

These art deco pieces were designed by Fritz Lampl, the founder of Bimini Werkstatte. In the late 1930’s, Lampl was forced to leave Austria due to the rise of Nazism. He fled to London, where he set up a new glass company by the name of Orplid glass. The set on offer in this auction was made prior to World War II.

Bimini glass and the nude dancing ladies in particular have become HIGHLY collectable. Bimini is included in Judith Miller’s Collector’s Guide entitled, 20th Century Glass. A set of dancing ladies is showcased in her book virtually identical to these. Bimini is rarely seen in Australia and I would predict it is about 40 times rarer here compared to Europe (and in Europe it’s rarely seen).

The Bimini nude dancing ladies are a solid investment and values have remained strong over the years. They are the epitome of art deco styling, showing the glamour and elegance of the era. This suite is so well made they’ve risen above the rest, superseding trends and becoming perennial. After much of modern glass on offer has ended up as landfill, this Bimini set will be passed onto to yet another owner- a symbol of a bygone era and that when something has been done well with heart and soul it will live on. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
