Background Info and Provenance
A GOOD-SIZED Perspex bird sculpture by famous Brazilian inventor and artist, Abraham Palatnik. At 22cm in length, this is larger than the majority of Palatnik sculptures out there. Most are around 10cm in size. This is a favourite of mine and has been on display at home for years. I just love Palatnik’s work!
Palatnik invented this concept in the 1960’s and he since created a swarm of celebrated designs. Known as kinechromatic art, this bird was created by infusing two pieces of acrylic together. On one, the patterning of the piece is screen-printed BY HAND and the other is infused on top; therefore the decoration is contained within the Perspex (as opposed to being painted on the surface). This technique helps make Palatnik’s pieces highly collectable as the decoration can’t be damaged- with normal handling, the piece will look as it does today for decades (probably centuries) to come.
Palatnik’s figures became highly collectable after high profile interior designers in America (such as Jonathan Adler) started showcasing his sculptures in various interiors. This piece is signed with the distinctive Pal signature. In Australia these figures have never been retailed and are basically impossible to find. I’ve seen a handful of Palatnik sculptures in the flesh in 19+ years of being in this business.
After most modern home décor has ended up as landfill, this bird will float into another person’s life, telling more stories as it goes. Palatnik’s work is an inspiration and has INCREASED MARKEDLY in value since they were made made. I saw one recently with the original store price label from the 1950’s- it cost $8 back in the day and sold on that website for over $250- what an earner! All the while people have enjoyed having the stunning piece in their homes. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint.

This vintage piece is in excellent condition for its age with NO noticeable condition flaws to report at all. NO chips, NO cracks, NO repairs. It may have a couple of very minor signs of use but nothing that’s noticed. It presents extremely well and for the age of the piece. With the millions of cardboard boxes that end up as landfill every year we don’t believe in supporting the manufacture of boxes for post. Instead of buying new boxes and packing materials and passing this cost onto our customers we spend considerable time sourcing used boxes and then fashioning boxes to fit each item. We do the same for bubble-wrap and foam pieces. This requires a large investment of time, energy, ingenuity, organization and storage space- it is much easier and cheaper to buy new packing materials but I can’t justify taking the easy way out when so much packing material ends up polluting our earth. Our $3.00 charge does little to pay for the time (and storage) needed do this and to pack your item (there is also the time needed to get your package to the post office). This is something we’re happy to do for our customers and the environment. We appreciate your support in this area.
