Background Info and Provenance

A Bitossi “Horseback Riders” sculpture labelled “Made In Italy For Joseph Magnin”. This is a Bitossi piece. I had another one with this glaze and label a few years back (it was the Bitossi hippo). This is the iconic “Horseback Riders” design which in my eyes is at the top. This is a great design and shape and sooooo RARE! There are NO second-hand “Horseback Rider” sculptures for sale anywhere in the world at present and I could find only a handful of photos online showing vintage pieces in this design. This shape is REALLY rare and the volcanic glaze is also extremely rare. I prefer it to the Rimini Blu colouring which was very popular at the time. Joseph Magnin commissioned their own slant on the Bitossi designs (and possibly demanded exclusivity as well). This volcanic glaze is more complicated to create compared to the Rimini Blu finish. I think this glaze works brilliantly giving this piece a warm earthy feel with an archaeological slant. The archaeological style coupled with this abstract form (that looks almost carnival-like) gives this piece an intriguing look.

The Joseph Magnin Italy label and accompanying provenance is what excites me most about this piece. Joseph Magnin was a high-end American Department store that mainly retailed high-end fashion and reached it’s heyday in the 1960’s (when this piece was initially retailed). It’s incredible to think it’s about 50 years old. I can picture this in this glamorous store back then. Top name celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe were known to shop at Joseph Magnin and in 1954 Monroe went to Magnin’s shop to purchase the clothes she wore to marry Joe DiMaggio.

This is a solid investment piece (extremely rare) with so many stories to tell. The label gives it irrefutable re-sale value in the future.  To my knowledge, vintage Bitossi pieces were never retailed in Australia- Bitossi animals are incredibly rare here and always sought-after by collectors.

Most home décor ends up in the bin within a matter of years whereas Bitossi pieces have only become more prized as time goes by. This is certainly one to hang onto for future generations- (its 50 years old already). There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint.
