Background Info and Provenance

An art glass piece designed by Bertil Vallien for Afors Boda of Sweden, 13cm high and 8cm at its widest point. This is a rare and significant piece produced by Vallien near the start of his career. I believe this lidded bowl was made in the mid-1960’s based on the paper Boda Afors label (foil labels were introduced from the early 1970’s). Bertil Vallien had his start at Afors Glasbruk between 1961–1963. Fifty years later he is not only the most celebrated and respected of the Kosta Boda artists, but one of the most celebrated creators of our time. This piece dates from Vallien’s beginnings, show-casing the talent that would go on to create a sensation for Kosta Boda. I love the fluidity of this one- the liquid quality- like a drop of water falling onto the surface of a pond. The colouring is brilliant too. It has the variation and movement in colour that is a hallmark of all quality hand-made art glass. I also love the “Bertil” label on the base. It would once have read “Bertil Vallien”.  Very rudimentary- kinda like a tag you’d expect to see on a school lunch-box! But this was the 1960’s and this now legendary factory had yet to win the reputation and acclaim we associate with Kosta Boda today.

Bertil Vallien’s work is a solid investment, particularly tagged pieces. Age and rarity give this piece extra appeal. I have seen only one other of these before (after 20 years in this business) and that piece was in photos on a European website. (It didn’t have either of the two labels this bowl has though.) Vallien’s work is sought-after world-wide and represents enduring style and quality. When other home décor is consigned to landfill, the beauty and functionality of this hand-made piece will be passed onto a new generation- a symbol of the timelessness of fine art and artisanship. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
