An art glass piece designed by Bertil Vallien for Afors Boda of Sweden. This is a rare piece of history done by Bertil Vallien near the very start of his career. I believe this piece was made in the mid-to-late 1960’s because of the paper Vallien label. Bertil Vallien had his start at Afors Glas Bruk between 1961–1963. Fifty years later he is not only the most celebrated and respected of any Kosta Boda artist, he is one of the most celebrated creators of our time. The piece on offer in this auction is around the time this all started. The talent that was later to create a sensation for Kosta Boda is shown in this piece. I love the fluidity of the piece- it’s like liquid chocolate. The base label of this piece reads, Vallien, the Bertil section has come off- a different piece I have from the same series reads, Bertil. The other piece I have has a Boda Afors label (which I believe dates it to the mid-to-late 1960’s). (Other pieces shown are not included.) This piece has a nice rich colour that changes as the piece progresses, a hallmark of quality hand-made glass. I also love the Vallien label on the base. It would have initially read Bertil Vallien, it’s like a tag you’d expect to see on a school lunch-box but this was the 1960’s and it came from the Boda factory (before it had amalgamated with Kosta) so it hadn’t yet to won the acclaim that Kosta Boda enjoys.

Bertil Vallien’s work is a great investment, particularly anything that’s tagged and I believe this specific piece has a lot of appeal simply because of its age, rarity and the fact it’s part of a series. (There’s other Boda pieces in this beautifully rich colour, in similarly fluid shapes). Vallien’s work is sought-after world-wide and will live on forever. After other home décor has ended up as landfill, this HAND-MADE piece will be passed onto a new generation- a symbol that when something has been done well its appeal will never waver. There are very few better ways to invest in your home or the future of our planet.
