A stunning Camphor Laurel coffee table HAND-CRAFTED in AUSTRALIA. This is a brilliant piece of design and will last forever if treated with some sense. No crappy Parker veneer here (NO chipboard – NO plastic laminate). With timber veneer you can only sand them back twice before they end up as landfill. This table has been crafted from SOLID slabs of Camphor Laurel so it can be sanded back and re-finished as many times as you want. This is a piece to be handed on from this generation to the next and respects the resources used to produced it. We see countless examples of items that are purposely built NOT to last (so you have to keep going out and buy more)- resources have been exploited for things to purposely end up as landfill. This piece is a refreshing change and instead of being flat-packed by machines in a developing country and sent overseas (using up more fossil fuels in the process) it has been created BY HAND right here in Australia by a craftsperson.
From this standpoint it’s as environmentally-friendly as money can buy but there’s more. Camphor Laurel is an introduced species in Australia and has become a pest in areas of South East Queensland. Camphor Laurel aggressively replaces native vegetation and trees such as blue gums (koalas’ preferred food). It disturbs natural ecosystems and contributes to endangering native wildlife (such as koalas). By removing these trees and using the timber in furniture it actually helps our environment (if skill is employed to allow the native plant-life to regenerate).
This is also an inspirational piece. I sometimes come across Camphor Laurel pieces with steel legs (these legs have come from China or other developing countries). This table however uses expert joinery and has timber sides as well. One side has a waterfall edge where the patterning in the timber runs along the top and then cascades over the edge and down the side. The other leg is set under the table at an angle. This creates a subtle point of interest and allows the top at that end to retain the “live edge” which gives the piece further character and natural charm. This piece strikes “that balance” in my eyes- just the right amount of bark has been removed and the live-edges are manipulated just enough to make the piece “pop” but still be restrained and elegant. This piece would add warmth and an earthy slant to any space. The artist has developed a bond with the timber and exposed its innate beauty to ensure the life-energy is not lost but instead is bought out to its fullest.
