Background Info and Provenance

A pair of art glass goblets made BY HAND by one of Australia’s most celebrated artists, Colin Heaney. I love the feeling this pair evokes. You’re kinda wandering through an enchanted forest, there’s mystery and wonder, fear and ecstasy. These are a highly emotive pieces that make you look twice.

The value of Heaney’s work will be one to watch in coming years because Heaney closed his glass studio several years ago to apply his skills to designing silks. Heaney has become internationally known for his art glass which is now held in important collections over the world (and also in Australia, of course). His larger pieces are very hard to get- these are substantial pieces measuring 19cm in height with a capacity of 325ml. Colin Heaney is Australia’s answer to art glass heavyweights such as Tiffany and Stueben in America. Heaney’s work is not common so this piece is an exciting investment prospect. Since his decision to close the Cape Bryon Hot Glass (CBHG) Studio, Heaney’s earlier work has risen in value and this trend will continue in the future.

His goblets have become immensely popular and become a staple for over 20 years. This pair was made in many parts. The complexity adds to the value. His personal signature to the base (C Heaney, 1992) as opposed to CBHG further adds to the appeal of this pair as does the original Heaney foil label on one glass.

In the end if you’re going to invest in art you personally need to love it. This pair are edgy in style and will certainly get noticed- they’d be great in a bar area and will give you another story to tell. (They came from an estate with a number of Heaney pieces and I was fortunate enough to get most of it. More of these pieces will be on offer in coming weeks/months.)

The appeal of Colin Heaney’s work is a credit to himself and staff, but also the Australian public who has embraced it so it stands alongside many of the world’s greats. Art-glass pumped out of factories in the thousands by machines is cheap but it rarely ignites any inspiration and passion- most ends up as landfill within a few years because after the trend has moved on, the piece is basically worthless. Colin Heaney’s creativity and expertise in glass has superseded trends and will continue to tell stories for generations to come. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and the future of our environment.
