Background Info and Provenance

An art glass vase made BY HAND by one of Australia’s most celebrated artists, Colin Heaney. This is a Limited Edition piece done in a production run of 10 only. It’s signed by Heaney himself and marked, 2/10. This is the best Heaney piece I’ve had (and the best one I’ve seen in the flesh too) and is hard to part with. I have no doubt it will increase in value in coming years. The value of all Heaney’s work will be worth watching in coming years because Heaney closed his glass studio several years ago to apply his skills as an artist to the field of silks. Heaney has become internationally known for his glass which is now held in important collections over the world. His paperweights which tend be around 8cm high are more common (though still rare) and can fetch around $180. (This piece is about 13cm across.) Colin Heaney is Australia’s answer to art glass heavyweights such as Tiffany and Stueben in America. A vase of this size and complexity made by Tiffany commands an average of $4000. Heaney’s work is not common (rarer than Tiffany) so this piece has great investment potential. Since his decision to close the Cape Bryon Hot Glass Studio (CBHG) Heaney’s work has risen in value and this trend is set to continue in the future.

His iridescent work from the early 1990’s is immensely popular for obvious reasons. This piece is highly complex and has been made in various stages. His personal signature to the base (C Heaney, 1990) as opposed to CBHG further adds to its appeal.

In the end if you’re going to invest in art you personally need to love it. The piece spoke to me the second I saw it- I love the play of light and its flowing expressive nature. The texture reminds me of veins in a leaf or the capillaries of the human body- branching out with precision and purpose, symbiotically joined- a reminder that we are all collaboratively part of something bigger.

The appeal of Colin Heaney’s work is a credit to himself and staff but also the Australian public who has embraced it so it stands alongside many of the world’s greats. Art-glass pumped out of factories in the thousands by machines is cheap but it rarely ignites any inspiration and passion- most ends up in the bin within a few years because after the trend has moved on the piece is basically worthless. Colin Heaney’s work shows an artist’s heart and soul. His work has superseded trends and will continue to tell stories for generations to come. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and in our environment.
