Background Info and Provenance

A HAND-MADE iridescent vase engraved “Denizen 90” to the base. This is a historically significant piece because it’s in the first year Robert Wynne opened the ‘Denizen’ glass studio in Manly, Sydney the next year. Wynne is considered an Australian pioneer of studio art glass and his pieces are represented in Australia and internationally (including the collections of President Bill Clinton, Sir Elton John and the Royal Family of Japan). I’ve seen several Robert Wynne pieces on ebay over the years in America priced at AU$2000. I’ve also seen a piece of his earlier work bid up to about $2000 at Shapiros auctions a few years back. The piece on offer in this listing is up there with those as far as artist merit is concerned.

This piece may be part of the “Terrain Series” that mimics the seismic activity happening in the earth- I’m not sure. What I am certain of is the expertise and skill needed to execute a piece like this. The skill exhibited is astounding- it’s hard to believe it’s one of his earliest pieces. When you look at this one it’s obvious why Robert Wynne has gone to become one of Australia’s most respected artists ever. The movement shown in the decoration is awe-inspiring. The number of colours, staggering. When sunlight passes through it, effect is mesmerizing. The decoration looks like fish scales to me- it shines and there’s a uniformity to the detail, much like the surface of a fish.

This piece is a great investment and worth a lot more right now (and I think it will only get more valuable as the years roll on). It has just as much “wow-factor” as most Loetz, Tiffany, Charles Lotton and Colin Heaney pieces. Tiffany pieces of this size fetch up to $6000. Lotton pieces around 24cm in height fetch about $2200. Robert Wynne has a proven track record for pushing boundaries and over the years his work has constantly evolved. In the 20 years I’ve been in this business I’ve seen only handful of other Robert Wynne pieces like this. A few years ago when I researching for another Robert Wynne piece I sold there was one online that had an auction estimate of $600 – $800 (the commission fees would be on top of this).

The work of other artists such as Colin Heaney didn’t evolve as much. Google, “Robert Wynne – Raven” and you’ll be inspired. If you dig into Wynne for a bit you’ll see that he’s constantly mixing it up and growing as an artist.

It’s incredible that this would have been one of Wynne’s earliest pieces, made when he opened his first gallery. This piece shows a flow and essence that only epitomizes why he has gone on to become one of Australia’s most respected artists. This is not just my opinion. Wynne recently won the coveted Kirra Galleries National Illuminating Glass Award with a $15,000 prize attached for his piece, “Raven’s Clutch”. He was also named in the Valiant Glass’ Top 10 Australian Glass Artists when this list was compiled.

Google, Robert Wynne glass and if you dig a little you’ll see some amazing pieces of work. This hand-made piece of art will be passed from one generation to the next. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint. And additionally when you buy hand-made art you’re supporting an industry where décor items come from the hands and hearts of artists (people) and not machines.
