Background Info and Provenance

Absolutely stunning- I love this piece! An art glass bird made BY HAND in Murano, Italy with white and dark glass threads known as filigrana (Italian for filigree glass). This piece was designed by Dino Martens for the Aureliano Toso Glassworks around 1954. These are extremely rare on a worldwide platform- I doubt you’ll see another one in Australia again. This is the epitome of sleek refined styling. It draws you in immediately and it continues to mesmerize the longer you look. It’s hard to get a piece with restrained elegance to still “pop” but this piece certainly does that.

The filigrana style originated on the island of Murano in the 16th century. Manufacture on Murano continued until the 18th century. Filigree glass was then revived in the 20th century by Dino Martens. Martens became the Aureliano Toso’s artistic director in 1939 which began a fertile collaboration that continued until 1963. These are highly-regarded pieces of art that regularly fetch about AU $350-$900 on an international platform (depending on size). I saw one on 1stdibs awhile back for AU $900 but it’s not there anymore. Also the Etsy listing (shown as a screenshot in this listing) for AU $371 is also missing now so I assume that piece has also sold.

The thing I love most about this piece is that it can become the focus of nearly any glass display and the fact it’s made BY HAND. The expertise required to create a piece like this is astounding making it a really strong investment. ANY high-end auction would accept this piece- take it to someone who knows art-glass and the piece will always fetch a strong price.

If you believe artist jobs should NOT be given to machines consider investing in hand-made pieces- this sends a clear message that you’d like artist jobs given back to people. There are few better ways to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint.
