Background Info and Provenance

This day/night lounge sofa (most likely by Don Rex) sold through iNVISeDGE for $1295 back in 2005. These days in 2019 I’d price the exact same sofa for around $1895. This piece had a dowel missing in the back (decorative only) which affects value to some extent- but could easily be replaced though. I originally thought this design may have been done by Wrightbilt but I’ve since come across this design definitively named as a Don Rex piece. That one was in Brisbane (which is where Don Rex operated from in the 1960’s) so that all makes sense. I knew it was by one of the smaller Australia firms of the era. Dox Rex fits the bill.

This 1960’s 3 SEATER day/night lounge sofa bed has an exquisite shape and the sleek quality of Danish pieces and would take pride of place in any lounge room. It has a beautifully finished timber frame (I’m not sure what type of timber it is but it is hardwood). It’s boasts the superior construction qualities for which DON REX Furniture is renowned. Don Rex lounges are in line with the quality of all other lounges of the same era (including the much-celebrated Parker pieces). With its stunning fluid shape and beautifully finished frame this piece takes cues from the refined elegance of Danish furniture. Today there are very few lounge suites on the market that will hold or increase their value with time. Of the vintage pieces the lounges from the 1950’s through to the early 70’s that have loose cushions sitting on timber frames are some of the only ones sought after post-production. There are a myriad of reasons for their popularity including the following,

• QUALITY construction techniques that have already proven themselves for over 40 years
• a beautifully finished exposed timber frame which is rarely seen anymore as a frame like this requires many hours of expert work
• the armrests are not upholstered meaning the suite looks better for longer. Cleaning and re-upholstery of these cushion covers is cheap and easy
• these lounges have a timeless style and would look amazing in any cutting-edge interior
• these are hard to get which means they always have solid re-sale value / investment appeal
