Background Info and Provenance
An art glass vase made BY HAND by one of America’s most celebrated glass artists, Robert Eickholt. This is called the Fireworks design for obvious reasons but the title is somewhat limiting. There are two spirals where the “life” of this vase emanates. Without a title we could come up with a list of possibilities. (Creation and Eye of Life are two that come to mind). I love the balance of swirling movement and shiny iridescence from the outer side and the hazy, indistinct splotches of colour that come through from the opposite side and blurs into oblivion. I’m reluctantly selling this one- I’d love to keep it longer but I can’t stay in business that way! This is a great size measuring 20cm in height so it nestles in well in any group.
Robert set-up Eickholt Glass in 1978 and blew glass right up until May 2013. Obviously Eickholt’s work is only going to get harder to find as it disperses through the world and collectors tightly hold onto their favourite pieces- there will be no more Eickholt pieces being made anymore.
Eickholt left us with a huge variety of designs which is how I initially noticed him. This particular piece is free-flowing yet careful in its creation- I love that simultaneous use of the right and left-brain.
This piece is signed by Eickholt in the usual manner with the year 2000. This is another one I got overseas- we just don’t get anything like this in Australia. Colin Heaney did similar work but the decoration on this one requires more expertise than a lot of Heaney’s work.
If you believe pieces for your home should come from the hands and hearts of people (instead of machines) consider investing in HAND-MADE art. When you do you promoting the stories that each hand-made piece comes with AND you’re reducing your carbon footprint.
