Background Info and Provenance

A ceramic/pottery “Thinking Man” done by Ellis in the 1960’s. The work of Ellis still stands alone as far as Australian ceramic design is concerned. Their ability to communicate emotion through design is something that is rarely seen in pottery but Ellis did it consistently. The stylized and flowing form of this piece ties in with the meditative stance of the figure. The man is lost in thought and the form of the piece is also lost- lost in motion- there’s no start and no end. Apart from the meditative quality I love that an Australian maker has created it and the skill it shows is right up there with the best in the world. The work of Ellis is highly acclaimed in Australia and deservedly so.

The design of this piece is timeless and today over 40 years later it’s as popular as ever. I can’t see why Ellis won’t always be sought after by collectors and the Thinking Man is one of their best designs. This piece is vintage and has been crafted to a large extent by hand- there are very few better ways to invest in your home and in our environment.
