Background Info and Provenance

(This description was written back in 2013.)

This design by Ellis from the 1960’s would be one of the best pottery pieces to come out of Australia. Organic in form with a smooth flow- the rounded shapes and curvilinear form really draw you in. This piece stands proudly amongst international offerings from the same era and in fact outshines most of what I’ve ever come across- it holds its ground alongside Bitossi pieces and even Gambone animals. Ellis ceramics proves the merit of Australian design and thanks to the internet items such as this are beginning to draw interest from overseas buyers.

Ellis ceramics is a highly-respected pottery firm that operated in Melbourne in the middle of last century. It was set up in 1953 by Czechoslovakian couple, Dasa and Milda Kratochvil. Whether you are in Australia or overseas Ellis pieces offer a great investment- these figures are not easy to find and Ellis ceramics have always attracted collectors. (This piece is not marked- no Ellis animals are. Occasionally they will have sticker labels- most don’t though. This is certainly Ellis though- guaranteed. I’ve had a few Ellis pottery pieces over the years and this is easy to identify as Ellis. Amongst other aspects, the colouring of this piece is spot on for Ellis.)

I believe this is the best Ellis figure I’ve had- the burnt-orange colour is stunning but teamed with the bronze underside makes for a very dynamic piece. The darker underside accentuates the curvilinear form and really complements the flow of this design. If you’re going to invest in something it might as well be something you’ll get years of pleasure from. This Ellis ceramic piece has a classic design that stands apart from trends. There’s no better way to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
