Background Info and Provenance

A B & B Italia Fortuny Tripod Floor Lamp made by Pallucco Italia. This piece was purchased from SPACE Furniture for about AU $5800 about 12 years ago. I found the current price for one of these lamps on a website in America (US $5000 = AU $6432). These were also retailed in Australia by Fanuli Italia. The quality is exceptional- they’re really sturdy and quite heavy. They’ve been constructed to last the long haul and will continue to be passed on for generations. The piece has the original maker’s label as shown in this listing.

The original concept for the Fortuny Lamp was conceived in the early 20th century (in 1907) by prolific inventor and man of many talents, Mariano Fortuny. The designer worked extensively in theatrical settings and experimented with the capabilities of light as it reflected off surfaces. Fortuny has been quoted as saying “It is not the quantity, but the quality of light, that makes things visible.”

In 1985 the Fortuny light was put into production by Italian lighting manufacturer Pallucco. The large movable shade emits a bright but attractive light that is softened as it reflects off of a large fabric and chrome central buttress. The shade section can swing around, tilt (with the use of wing-nuts at each end to hold the position) and adjust in height. It’s perfect for large spaces that need ambient light.

The piece adds a touch of old-school glamour with a modernist twist- that sounds impossible but look at the interior shot included in this listing. (The photo was found on the B & B Italia website- what an incredible interior!) This lamp has all the romance of the art deco period but would suit many spaces. This is the LARGER size of this design. They were done in 2 sizes. You need a bit a space for it to “breathe”- in a loft-style apartment or warehouse conversion it would look incredible!

When most modern floor lamps have gone out of style and ended up as landfill this QUALITY vintage piece (with the original maker’s label still attached) will be passed onto another owner to tell a whole new swarm of stories. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and the future of our environment.
