Description

Priced at only $895 EACH!

We’ve sold a pair of these chairs in the past- $3,590 THE PAIR in the first 2 days they were listed. This pair show signs of use but still present well overall (as shown in our array photos).

LOCATION- BRISBANE metro area but these can be transported Australia-wide. It would be about $280 to get both chairs to SYDNEY.

The listing price is PER chair priced if you buy both. I’m really keen to keep them together as a pair but will consider offers on a single chair. Call us on the phone number given in our CONTACT section if you have interest in purchasing any iNVISeDGE item.

Provenance and Background Information

I’ve really fallen for these! The ironic thing is, I usually hate black furniture but these are just stunning. It’s funny, but I think they actually need to be black for the chair design to realise its full potential. The shape is so sleek and minimalist that the colour of the outer shell needs to be bold to get properly noticed. Because the shape is so pared-back, black allows the shape of the chair to really take focus- NOT the colour! (It’s usually the other way around with black furniture.) The way the light plays on the high-gloss plastic shells helps the overall shape take the limelight here. I’ve included a screenshot showing these chairs in other colours- I don’t think the other colours work. The black ones really jump off the page. And they do in person too. A few people visited our Geelong storage space whilst I was photographing the last pair of these that we had. The enthusiasm of everyone was palpable- and my guess is my enthusiasm for these is shining through the written word here too.

These Jehs and Laub Space-Age chairs for Fritz Hansen are exceptional chairs- the design is exceptional, the style is at the pinnacle, the comfort is brilliant, the investment appeal is brilliant- the full report card here gets a resounding tick in every category.

I’m going to take a little bit more of your time to extrapolate on the above. The comfort first. The angles here are spot-on- they support and hold you in perfect seating position. The chairs are holding you properly here- your back is supported at the right angle and fully held. This is despite the fact they are not tall chairs. And they could never be- the sleek, minimalist magic would never happen with a tall back. The other thing about the comfort I like is the generous proportions. This means you can find various comfortable positions in this chair- you can move around in the chairs and into the corners which means it’s suitable for sitting in for extended periods as well.

The other big plus is the investment appeal on offer. From what I have gleaned from an hour or so of online research into this design is that they were made for a very limited production run only- back around 2007. This was when all Fritz Hansen items were still made in DENMARK. I have only seen this design dated 2007 and 2010 and am almost certain they were only made then. They are certainly not made today (in 2023)- there are no new ones being sold online at the moment. I was told they sold for AU$4000 EACH new back in 2007. I saw some being sold on 1stdibs for AU$3200 for ONE and AU$4732 for a PAIR. This is probably the first time I’ve seen values on 1stdibs that are realistic- I even think they’re undervalued at these prices. There’s not many of these around- there is real potential in the investment appeal of this design. And mine here are the cheapest I’ve seen these for anywhere in the world. The investment appeal here is a no-brainer. These are certainly something I’d have in my own home- if I had ten homes to house all this stuff! (… I don’t!)

Jergen Laub and Markus Jehs are both industrial designers who graduated from the Schwabisch Gmund University in Germany in 1992. They later established their design studio and have designed pieces for a range of international manufacturers including Fritz Hansen. The following is taken from the Jehs + Laub website… (There is no point re-writing what they’ve said because this sums it all up perfectly, “the minimalist upholstery brings the comfort through the moulding of the shell which is at the same time firm but slightly flexible. The chair is in fact incredibly comfortable; it’s like sitting in nice, big hand. The way small pieces of fabric are clicked on is very similar to the production of cars where you piece the insides together using small components. To control the softness of the seat, it is connected through 4 arms with the base of the chair, like bones and muscles in the human body.”

This is a rare opportunity to own a Fritz Hansen design classic (that was done in a limited production run) for a fraction of its real value. The beauty of investing in designer originals is knowing they will hold their value over time (or increase in value along with inflation), plus you can be assured of the quality and durability you’re getting. There’s no better way to invest in your home and reduce landfill. (These chairs are already 16 years old- and look at them! They won’t be ending up in landfill anytime soon.)

This pair of Fritz Hansen Space-Age chairs by Jehs and Laub are both in excellent condition for chairs that are 14 years old and been very solidly used. The structure is solid and strong with no damage or weakness at all. The construction all over is heavy, solid and VERY STURDY. It’d be virtually impossible to break these chairs! They are also in very good to excellent cosmetic condition overall. The upholstery on both chairs has wrinkles in the seat section as shown in our photos. This is not ordinarily noticed because of the angle of the seat- the seat section sits in a shadow and even if you get your head at the angle to see it, it's not jarring. I'd say this upholstery is vinyl and this covering was specifically chosen for heavy use in a commercial situation. (It is not wearing like leather does- it looks like vinyl to me.) It's obvious these chairs have seen heavy use in a commercial situation- these do not show domestic use. The edges also have the black colour of the plastic wearing in areas as shown in the photos. This is barely noticed- this has occurred because the chairs were used near a wall and rubbed up against some of the edges- this is not normal use and won't get any worse if they're used away from walls. These edges could be coloured with a black marker pen and this minor issue would then not be noticed at all- it's not ordinarily noticed otherwise. There are a few very feint, superficial scratches in the plastic shells but the surface is highly reflective so these are only noticed when you're looking at that particular area at one angle only. And even then they are not really seen. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Measurements.
