Background Info and Provenance

(This description was written in 2024. Some information may be time-sensitive eg. values.)

An incredible modular suite that comprises of 9 pieces altogether. This suite can be assembled in a multitude of ways. The base section where 4 pieces slide in can be used to create a 4-seater sofa or a 3-seater with coffee table on either end or the coffee table can even be placed in the middle if desired. If the coffee table is employed in the 4-section base, the 4th seat can be put on top of a single base section to create a single-seater chair (see the photos). Additionally there is a high-back chair (with armrests) that matches the suite but is priced separately. It’s very rare to get this number of pieces in this design- we’ve never had any pieces in this design before and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a four-seater version of this, not even in photos. The four-seater option is where the value lies and why I travelled to Melbourne to work with this item. The dimensions are perfect- the 4-seater section measures 250cm across, which is ideal in most rooms. The additional piece allows a L-shape configuration to be set up in a space. Or if there’s no space, put the coffee table top on the additional base section instead- then the resulting coffee table can be put in front of the sofa. The versatility of this suite means that when you move house you’ll have various options with how to set it up.

I love the Danish aesthetic of this design- the sculptural elegance- and obviously the interchangeable aspect. When set-up, this is all-class and if re-upholstered it’d make a lifetime investment. The current owners have had it 18 years- in their new house it is currently being used in the second lounge room but they want to make this an extra bedroom at some stage so it’s time for them to bid this rare suite farewell and find the next custodian.

The comfort is great. You’ll notice the slight slant back in the seat section, the angle of the back and generous plushness. This suite holds you in perfect seating position. The backs are also at a great height- low enough to tailor a minimalist low-line look but just enough to support your full back. The comfort has been very carefully considered.

If the Module furniture factory started up again in Australia and made this Gerald Easden modular suite again to this exact standard, you’d be paying about $12,000 for all 9 pieces. The investment appeal on offer here is a no-brainer. In my opinion, this suite can only hold its value or go up.

Why buy a set of modern lounge suite that will lose its value by about HALF the second you walk it out the shop? Here, you are offered an item built IN AUSTRALIA about 55 years ago that should only increase in value in the future. Plus, by supporting iNVISeDGE, you’re supporting a business that’s been meeting the challenge of running a small business in Australia for over 20 years. It’s a win for everybody. I can’t think of any better way to invest in your home and reduce landfill. (EVERY SINGLE item in my home is vintage or was purchased second-hand- except a couple of my electrical appliances- and every single item has increased in value whilst I’ve enjoyed using it in my home. Again, excluding some electrical appliances.)

This modular lounge suite by Gerald Easden is in good condition overall. None of the pieces have any structural repairs or breaks. Most of the joints are loose in the large timber stretcher base near the floor and in need of re-gluing but this doesn't affect the use of the lounge at all. The seat sections hook into this base so they hold the base sections together when in use anyway. The current owners have used this suite for 18 years- they've used the bases like this for years with no issues. The bases would benefit from having the joints re-glued though. The upholstery is getting close to being on its last legs but I advised the owners to leave the suite as is so the new owners could choose the fabric they want. The suite currently has a real vintage character to it- I don't think it is unsightly at all but it certainly looks vintage. You could continue using it like this for some time if you like the vintage look (it'd be ideal if your children are still young). The upholstery is original so is now about 60 YEARS OLD. It has been looked after but looks all its age. It is thread-bare in some areas- mainly along the sides where each piece rubs against each other when sat down. (These areas are not ordinarily noticed.) Re-upholstery would need to be considered fairly soon but the suite could be still used as is for some time. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The current fabric is thick wool. This covering has protected the cushioning so the condition of the original cushioning is very good. I'd be dubious about replacing the cushioning because the quality far exceeds what's on offer today and if protected from the upholstery it keeps on keeping on. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The coffee table top has been refinished at some stage. The patterning in the timber-top is beautiful. It's in need of another light sand. I would use an oil based stain to deepen the tone and match in with the base sections. It can be used as is but would benefit from being refinished. Measurements. Height- cm. Across- cm. Depth- cm. Read my 1200+ ebay feedback comments (all for vintage sales) to be assured that I strive to describe all my items as accurately as I can and I won’t stock items unless they’re in a condition I’d have in my own home.
