Background Info and Provenance

(Written in 2014)

A Guido Gambone WHITE & GREEN Pitcher created BY HAND in the 1950’s. Guido Gambone worked in Italy in the 1950’s and 1960’s and his work is highly regarded. Collectors are drawn to Gambone pieces because of the huge repertoire of designs he created. Unlike Bitossi’s work where the same design was often produced in the thousands Gambone’s pieces are usually one-off pieces or produced in very small runs. Gambone’s output spanned over a decade but it’s the range and number of creative designs that has won him such high praise- he just kept on releasing different ideas. Google, Guido Gambone and do a short trawl and you’ll be captivated. I love the hand-painted designs on his pieces. Some are simple but striking, others are complex, intricate and draw you in. The decoration on this pot is simple but works brilliantly. This piece has a rustic almost prehistoric quality and the Gambone glaze accentuates this. The glaze he used is uncommon and has become a signature of his work. The bubbled volcanic-type effect is a delight to the senses. I also like the ribbed form of this piece. This type of shape is very hard to create- the ribs going vertically and horizontally require the skill of a master.

I think this is the first Guido Gambone piece I’ve seen in Australia- I bought this in from Europe. You can feel the HAND-MADE quality of vintage Gambone and this is something you don’t come across much anymore. Gambone’s work has massive international collector’s appeal and I saw many pieces on the 1st Dibs website for $4000 and more. This piece bears the donkey mark with Italy. This is Gambone’s most recognizable mark.

The real beauty of owning vintage Italian pottery is knowing these hand-made pieces won’t be in vogue for a few years or even just one season before ending up in the bin- this piece has survived about 50 years already and is set to last another 50 or more. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint. (This listing is for the GREEN & WHITE PITCHER shown in the middle of the group photos only.)
