Historically significant HAND-CRAFTED glazed pot by E. Meredith of Maryborough.

This HAND-CRAFTED VINTAGE item was SOLD by iNVISeDGE back in 2012 for AU $285! If I were listing this a rare Australian historical piece like this now, in 2020, I would ask around at same or slightly more.

Background Info and Provenance

I bought this stunning piece of Australian pottery, made by E. Meredith of Maryborough, from a dealer who lives North of Gympie who sources stock found around Gympie and Maryborough. This pot has a height of 21cm and the full diameter is about 17cm. This piece is extremely rare and steeped in Australian history. Edwin Meredith came to Queensland in 1862. He was a brick-maker in Brisbane before arriving in Maryborough in 1874. He started manufacturing bricks, pottery drain pipes and general pottery in Ferry St, Maryborough. I came across the following ad while researching this listing.

Edwin Meredith died in 1921 and this is where I was stumped for a while. This piece to me looks late-1940’s maybe 1950’s however after reading further I found that his son, also named Edwin, continued the family business after his father’s death. This probably would have been made as a flower pot and I’d say in the above ad it would come under the title, fancy pots.

This pot has been HAND-MADE and HAND-PAINTED by E Meredith and would have been ahead of its time. There are at least seven colours I can see in this piece and the blending of colours and the expressive nature of the piece makes it interesting for its time. This is an important historical piece with many stories to tell. I’ve seen a water monkey impressed with “E Meredith, Maryborough” with an auction estimate of $800-$1000. I’d say this piece didn’t get the impression because it was a one-off hand-made piece that Edwin did on the side (it was also HAND-painted all over including the base).

After the majority of modern home décor has been thrown into landfill this 60-odd-year-old, fully HAND-MADE pot will be passed onto yet another generation to tell further stories to. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and in our environment.
