Background Info and Provenance

(Description written in 2024.)

A stylish hall table/desk/dressing table/writing table or hall table. This is one of the best furniture pieces to ever come out of Australia. It’s so practical!! These pieces were made to go in the bedroom back in the late-1950’s and early-1960’s to give the lady of the house somewhere to apply their perfume and make-up. What if there were two men in the house, I hear you say? Or two women? Hmmm … I’ve already got off point…. My point is, this piece of furniture was made back in the day to put exclusively in the bedroom. These days they can be used in a multitude of other ways… In a living area to use as an occasional desk if space is at a premium, this table offers the perfect space to set up a laptop (close all your work away at the end of the session) plus there’s additional storage in your living room for stationery, odds and ends, chargers, ipads, plates, crockery … you get my drift … whatever junk that needs to be stored away in your living area. Alternatively it would also be PERFECT to use as a multi-purpose table at the entry of the home, use the mirror to consult yourself before leaving the house- store away your keys, scarves, gloves, hats, spare jacket … you get my drift … whatever junk that needs to be stored away at the entry of the home. Use your imagination- the applications for a table like this are endless. You won’t find an investment piece that’s any more practical! I would have a piece like this in my happily-ever-after home- in a second. I LOVE the looks, the QUALITY, the functionality, the style, the durability and most importantly, the INVESTMENT APPEAL. Look after this piece and I can’t see it losing a cent of value … ever!

This piece could not even be made for this price anymore but is an AUTHENTIC VINTAGE piece made in AUSTRALIA in the very early 1960’s by Hans Hayson, with labels to verify it. I’ve seen these tables increase in value over the full 23 years I’ve been in this business and there’s no reason why this won’t continue.

The thing I love most about this piece is that there’s NO shitty chipboard in it- similar Parker pieces are the same price but they’re made of chipboard- this piece is SOLID timber (a mix of solid timber and plywood). It has a timber veneer that creates a stylish, tidy appearance- this Hans Hayson piece has the aesthetics and QUALITY  the Danes are famous for. This is a Danish-looking piece made by one of the best in the businesses operating in AUSTRALIA back in early-1960’s. The construction QUALITY is exceptional. It has been built to last and HAS lasted- just look at it after about 60 years of use! There’s no guessing the durability of what’s on offer here- just give it a courtesy glance-over and see that the durability and longevity is irrefutable.

Hans Hayson operated in the middle of the last century, initially in South Melbourne and Carlton, Melbourne. As it turns out, there’s no such person as Hans Hayson; rather the company was the brain-child of Cliff Hayton and Bill Ericsson- the Hayson word resulted from taking the the first 3 and the last 3 letters from the surnames of each company owner. Cliff Hayton, who was the head designer of the company, found himself travelling to Copenhagen in the late-1950’s in search of inspiration for a range of furniture that would meet a growing demand in Australia for contemporary design. This was where the designs for furniture such as this piece germinated.

This table and storage piece by Hans Hayson Furniture Manufacturing Co. Pty Ltd sits at the pinnacle of furniture to be ever made in Australia and is regarded as being one of the best (if not the best) vintage dressing tables ever released in Australia. (Though, it could also be used for a multitude of other purposes). There’s no reason why this piece won’t continue to appreciate in value in future years. Get a piece of plate-glass cut for the top and you’ll have a lifetime INVESTMENT that I can’t see losing any value. There’s no better way I can think of to invest in your home and the future of our environment.

Then, when the photo is enlarged, click on it again to Supersize the image. This Hans Hayson piece shows minor signs of use but nothing that spoils it. The piece is solid and sturdy with NO structural issues to report at all- NO cracks, NO repairs, NO breaks, NO loose joints or wobbles. The quality is exceptional- therefore the piece has been built to last ... and that it has, over the course of 60 years now! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The top shows various signs of use but nothing that's quickly noticed. You have to scrutinise the top pretty closely to see any signs of use. The piece presents beautifully overall and looks great for a vintage piece of this nature and age. You could lightly sand the top and re-oil it- if this was done, the top would certainly present better but it looks good as is. It all depends on how fussy you are and whether you could be bothered devoting an hour or two to give the piece a bit of love. If it was my piece I would have done this and upped the price but this is a consignment piece that I personally don't own. I personally photographed the item so know exactly what I'm selling. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Measurements.
