Background Info and Provenance

An art glass vase made BY HAND by one of Australia’s most celebrated artists, Colin Heaney. The value of Heaney’s work will be one to watch in coming years because Heaney closed his glass studio several years ago to apply his skills as an artist to the field of silks. Heaney has become internationally known for his glass work which is now held in important collections over the world (and obviously Australia as well). Colin Heaney pieces sit strongly beside international art-glass heavyweights such as Tiffany and Stueben in America. The piece shows you why. The piece is signed with the date 1988 and although this is one of his earlier pieces it shows clearly why he became so respected as an artist. This piece really stands out and brims with glamour but at the same time is not over the top but refined and elegant. A vase of this size and complexity made by Tiffany commands an average of $3500. Heaney’s work is not common (much rarer than Tiffany) so this piece is a solid investment prospect. Since his decision to close the Cape Bryon Hot Glass Studio (CBHG) Heaney’s older work has risen in value and this trend is set to continue in the future.

His iridescent work from the early 1990’s is immensely popular for obvious reasons and tends to be the most sought-after. (And this one is even earlier- this is one of the earliest Colin Heaney pieces I’ve seen. It has his gold label but also his “older” signature before it became more refined and what’s seen on virtually all his pieces. This piece was made in two parts (the globe and then the base + “wave”) which further adds to the value.

In the end if you’re going to invest in art you personally need to love it. The piece spoke to me the second I saw it- I love the play of light and the flow of the piece.

The appeal of Colin Heaney’s work is a credit to himself and staff but also the Australian public who has embraced it ensuring it stands alongside many of the world’s greats. Art-glass pumped out of factories in the thousands by machines is cheap but it rarely ignites any inspiration and passion- most ends up as landfill within a few years because after the trend has moved on the piece is basically worthless. Colin Heaney’s work has superseded trends and will continue to tell stories for generations to come. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and in our environment.
