Provenance & Background Information

(Written in 2021)

A strong investment piece and great addition to any mid-century glass collection. The Holmegaard Carnaby Gulvase vase is a design classic over 50 years on has become highly collectable. The Carnaby series, designed by Per Lütken and Christer Holmgren in 1968, included a range of stunning shapes that had a white (opal) inner casing and a coloured glass casing on the outside. They were all made BY HAND by artisans in Denmark back in the late-1960’s and early-70’s. They are expertly made- the craftsmanship shown in this piece is incredible. Carnaby pieces are very rare (particularly in Australia where they’re about 50 times rarer than Europe). (Holmegaard Carnaby pieces with a paper label are basically impossible to find here- I got this from a source in Europe.)

The Carnaby range consistently fetches solid prices worldwide and in the future vintage glass will only become more prized particularly pieces that are labelled and have become style icons (like the Carnaby-line has). The concept of having an inner white casing may seem simple enough but this concept has had a massive influence on glass design since its inception. All of Per Lutken’s designs have become style icons (especially the Carnaby range). He is a highly-celebrated creator and when you come into contact with his designs you’re experiencing more than just a piece of glass. This piece symbolizes that when something is made expertly by people- with creativity, ingenuity and thought- it lives forever.

Many homewares last a few years or even just one season before ending up as landfill- Holmegaard’s Carnaby range has been in vogue for about 5 decades now (written 2021), changing hands over the years and only becoming more valued as time goes on. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and in the future of our environment. THIS LISTING IS FOR THE LIGHT BLUE GULVASE ONLY- the others are available separately. The stopper is not included- it came off a different piece.
