Background Info and Provenance
(Written in 2021.)
A brilliant investment piece and great addition to any mid-century glass collection, this Holmegaard “Cascade” Planter Bowl by Per Lutken is a design classic and 50 years on is even more popular today compared to when this series was first released in 1970. There are many die-hard Lutken fans out there including various high-profile collectors (in Europe). His rare pieces are now fetching thousands of dollars. The Cascade series has steadily INCREASED in value since these pieces were first created. Collectors will pay virtually anything to get the best Per Lütken pieces they can get their hands on. They’ve seen values for Lütken’s work constantly appreciate in value (and so have I!). There’s no reason I can see why this trend won’t continue.
Yes- you can buy cheap shitty décor pieces that are mass-produced by machines for your home but what’s the point? The second they are chipped they are worthless and end up as landfill where the piece will pollute our earth for possibly hundreds of years. (These modern pieces are often VERY easy to chip too, because the glass they’re using in these things is cheap and nasty- I wouldn’t be surprised if the actual glass content is minimal. The majority of the content in some of these cheap pieces would be toxic compounds- the composition would be padded out with cheap chemicals so they can be churned out in the thousands as cheaply as they can make them.)
Per Lütken was a Danish glassmaker (1916–1998), most famous for his works at Holmegaard Glass Factory (“Holmegaard Glasværk” in Danish). Lütken’s work will be celebrated in the history of Danish glassmaking forever. He designed more than 3,000 pieces of glass for Holmegaard, a company for whom he worked from 1942, until his death in 1998. Lütken was one of the most influential designers of the 20th century- hopefully he will pave the way for a new band of creators to push boundaries just like he did.
The Cascade Series is very popular amongst collectors for obvious reasons. The freeform arbitrary designs created by swirling different colours through the glass initiates a “magical flow” unique to this series. If you study the screen-shots I’ve included in this listing, you’ll see that this freeform flow is quite captivating but what’s even more attractive is the fact that EVERY piece is COMPLETELY unique. These pieces capture a moment in time that will never be re-created in exactly the same way ever again. Cascade goblets are VERY popular but make no mistake EVERY Holmegaard Cascade piece is collectable- I can only see values increasing for these pieces in future years (and it is my opinion that gains will be significant too). Any glass artist in Australia who is hand-creating art glass today will tell you that a piece of this complexity and skill could NOT be produced by hand for the prices these pieces are currently selling for. With this in mind, it will become obvious to most that values can ONLY go up!
This piece is beautifully (and clearly signed) to the base which cements the investment appeal on offer. I’m pretty sure it reads, HG 3 and the monogram underneath is Per Lütken’s signature (initials). Cascade pieces that are signed are all signed this way. I’m pretty sure the 3 stands for “1973”. To my knowledge various Holmegaard pieces designed and created in the 1970’s had a single digit after the HG to signify the year within the decade of 1970 it was created in. (The HG stands for Holmegaard). It’s very likely that this particular piece was crafted in 1973 (close to my birth year!)
Though many of Holmegaard’s designs are simple enough, most of Holmegaard’s designs have become style icons. When you come into contact with an object like this, you’re experiencing more than just a piece of glass- some of Holmegaard’s work is considered some of the most influential art created in the second-half of the 20th century. Do yourself a favour, your local community a favour and help protect our environment by investing in HAND-MADE décor for your home. These skills are being lost in today’s world. Every time you buy a cheap mass-produced décor piece off the shelves of a large department store, you’re saying that art need not be valued anymore and that machines we’re better off having machines create for us. If you believe our art should be created by the hands and hearts of REAL PEOPLE then put your money where your mouth is- I do! EVERYTHING in my home is VINTAGE and/or HAND-CRAFTED (except for my undies and some of my t-shirts! lol). This gives me a great deal of satisfaction and dare I say pleasure (as creepy as that sounds). When you invest in HAND-CRAFTED VINTAGE pieces there are very few better ways you can invest in your home and help protect our planet for future generations.

This vintage piece is in excellent condition for its age with no noticeable damage to report at all. NO cracks, NO chips, NO noticeable scratches. It presents very well for something that’s nearing 50 years old. When I used this at home as a planter I put a rag down underneath to protect the glass. All of the glass INCLUDING the interior is in brilliant condition for any glass piece particularly something of this size. It’s almost as if this one has come out of a time capsule. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Measurements. This is a substantial piece of art-glass! Diameter- 17.5cm. Height- 15.5cm. Weight- 2136 grams. This one is almost 5 times bigger than the piece that’s currently on Etsy for basically the same price as this! Read my 1200+ ebay feedback comments (ALL for vintage design SALES)- 100 or so are from repeat customers. This is your guarantee that I strive to describe all my items as accurately as I can and I will not stock items unless they are in excellent condition.
PICK-UP . . . from 30 or 40 minutes North of BRISBANE city is accepted but postage is preferred as my home is hard to find. Because of this I will nominate a friend or family member for you to collect the item from if you need collection. Pick-up in person must be worked out prior to purchase- thank you. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ POSTAGE is offered internationally. All our Decorative Arts pieces are delivered through AUSTRALIA POST. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ POSTAGE ESTIMATES. . . . ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ To BRISBANE- most of our pieces cost $15 - $18 to send. . . To SYDNEY or MELBOURNE- Small Vase- around $20 - $23, Medium Vase- around $20 - $25, Large Vase- around $24 - $30. Let us know if you need an EXACT COST for postage prior to purchase. The above postage estimates include $2.95 for a signature on delivery. . . INSURANCE against being lost or broken in transit up to the value of $200 is included in the estimates above. If your vase is cheaper or more expensive than $200 this will effect your postage fee slightly. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A BOXING FEE of $3.00 is included in the fee above to cover the cost of searching for and storing used packing materials. With the millions of cardboard boxes that end up as landfill every year we don’t believe in supporting the manufacture of boxes for post. Instead of buying new boxes and packing materials and passing this cost onto our customers we spend considerable time sourcing used boxes and then fashioning boxes to fit each item. We do the same for bubble-wrap and foam pieces. This requires a large investment of time, energy, ingenuity, organization and storage space- it is much easier and cheaper to buy new packing materials but I can’t justify taking the easy way out when so much packing material ends up polluting our earth. Our $3.00 charge does little to pay for the time (and storage) needed do this and to pack your item (there is also the time needed to get your package to the post office). This is something we’re happy to do for our customers and the environment. We appreciate your support in this area.

Additionally please be aware that in Australia ALL consumers are protected BY LAW if the goods or services they buy are not as described. (But this should be of no concern- in our first 15 years of trading we have over 1150 positive ebay feedback comments and ZERO negative feedback comments.) ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
