An AUTHENTIC 3.5-seater LEATHER sofa by Jean Gillon in Brazilian Jacaranda Rosewood. This piece is LABELLED (2 Labels reading, “HAND-MADE JACARANDA WOOD. WOOD ART. Industria Brasileira. Design By Jean Gillon.” Gillon’s work is incredibly rare on a worldwide platform and held in very high esteem. There’s a few chairs of his for sale on 1st Dibs at the moment (all overseas)- one single chair with the footstool is $22,854 AUD. There’s only 2 sofas for sale worldwide at the time of writing (BOTH in America) but one of them is not one of his better designs. The other one has been re-upholstered- NOT in leather (I personally don’t like the fabric choice) and it’s $17,268 AUD. This piece is at the pinnacle of mid-century design. Some of the reason is because various furniture manufacturers took an environmental stand against the continued use of Rosewood in the late-1970’s because these trees were becoming endangered. As a result, all vintage Rosewood pieces are incredibly RARE and sought-after world-wide, particularly Australia. I can count on one hand the number of Rosewood pieces I’ve sold in 15 years of being on this business. One label has 1977 typewritten on it but I don’t think this is the year of production- virtually all the dealers representing Gillon pieces (all overseas) say his pieces are 1960’s.
The construction quality is expert- handcrafted in Brazil to last generations, the materials top-quality, the comfort great and the looks are stunning. This leaves investment appeal- Rosewood pieces are not going to get easier to find in the future and this stunning timber has been a perennial favourite- always sought-after by interior architects going for any number of styles and looks. And, if a similar Jean Gillon piece is selling overseas for $17 268 the investment appeal of this is a no-brainer.
The best part of investing in items such as these is knowing how they’ll stand up over time- look at this one after about 50 years! You’re assured of the quality AND it’s one of those rare pieces that will not lose value the second you buy it but instead will become more prized as the years roll on. There’s no better way to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint / landfill.
