A 2-seater lounge sofa in PREMIUM FULL-GRAIN leather by South Australian furniture maker Joe Rufenacht. (OTHER PIECES ARE PRICED SEPARATELY). This suite is from around 1990- the condition after 30+ years is testament to the QUALITY on offer. Rufenacht started in the mid-1970’s and by 1980 he’d pocketed more design awards than any other furniture maker in Australia. So why does everyone go gaga over Parker when furniture like this is better built and more highly-regarded? Parker is everywhere- everyone knows it, everyone has seen it. Rufenacht’s designs are virtually impossible to find (they were very expensive in their day) which means they slide under the radar somewhat but anyone with a honed eye knows what they’re seeing. His designs tick EVERY box- a resounding tick for comfort, design, quality and investment-appeal. His swivel lounge-chair design won the prestigious Australian design award back in 1978. Joe told ABC in 2006 that it took him 40 different prototypes to get his dining chair right- the design on offer here probably took about the same. This back leg is very unusual.
This is one of my favourite designs by Joe. It has a real Scandinavian style (a Swedish look?)- those sweeping curves and the minimalist styling, coupled with the lighter tones of the timber and leather create elegance and refinement.
This furniture is an obvious furniture investment. Rufenacht’s designs have become hot property in the last few years. His dining chairs have increased in value a LOT- so too has his swivel lounge chairs. This design is largely undiscovered at the moment (only because it’s so hard to find! It’s the first in this design I’ve had.) I can only see values going up. Demand for Tessa Furniture has reached fever-pitch during COVID-19 lockdowns- this suite is at least in line with Tessa’s best offerings. The structural quality is exceptional as is the VINTAGE FULL-GRAIN leather.
Providing you use this suite with some sense Rufenacht’s furniture will last a lifetime (but most likely more). The proper FULL-GRAIN leather here is about 30 years old- the best you can buy. (It’s prestigious Australian Howe leather- some of Rufenacht’s earlier work had the HOWE leather label on it- this leather is identical to what I’ve had in the past- THICK, beautifully soft and luxurious.) With normal use (and minor maintenance) this furniture will look virtually the same as it does today in another 30 to 70 years. This is an obvious investment not just financially but from an environmental standpoint- all elements and the design has been very carefully considered to last the long-haul.
The other thing I like about this suite is the colour- the light timber is less imposing but still stylish. The camel-coloured leather complements the frames perfectly. There’s warmth and earthiness in this suite but it’s not too bold so it’s would also work well in a smaller space. In a modern apartment it’d add a warm, classy look.
After many modern pieces end up as landfill this 30-year-old suite will be passed onto another owner and then an entirely new generation. It was said on the ABC in 2006 that Rufenacht’s furniture will be the antiques of tomorrow and after being in this business for 19 years I agree. JR furniture (Rufenacht’s company) closed its doors in 2006 unable to compete with cheap overseas imports any longer. The 30+ year history of this Australian business has etched a permanent place in Australian furniture history and if his work is not already in Australian museums and galleries, it will be.
And there’s one last thing to add. The comfort is brilliant. A higher-back for extra comfort and the angles are all spot-on. You are held in perfect seating position here. (THIS LISTING PRICE IS FOR THE 2-SEATER SOFA ONLY. THE MATCHING PAIR OF CHAIRS, FOOTSTOOL AND COFFEE TABLE ARE PRICED SEPARATELY.)
