A stunning mid-century modern lounge sofa / day bed by highly-regarded Australian furniture designer and manufacturer, John Duffecy. I love the generous proportions of this couch- if you flick off the back cushion, the seat section is large enough to become a day bed, perfect for those Sunday afternoon siestas! (Without the back cushion, the seat is roughly the same size as a single bed.) I also love the sleek minimalist aesthetic and how these are loose cushions sitting on this beautifully sculptured timber frame. This is the most practical lounge design ever done because cleaning is a breeze. Simply unzip the cushion-covers and wash them using the gentle cycle in Woolmix- IMPORTANT- replace the covers whilst still damp to prevent shrinkage! Reupholstery is just as easy. Take the covers with new fabric to anyone with a sewing machine and voila- a new sofa in no time without shelling out a fortune.
John Duffecy has been long celebrated for the construction quality of his work- the construction quality and skill shown here is second to none. The piece is strong, sturdy and solid despite over 60 years of use. The design is one of the most cultured and stylish I’ve ever come across.
John Duffecy, was a talented Australian designer of the 1950’s and 60’s who sold out of a showroom in Glenmore Road, Paddington (Sydney). His work was commissioned by various prominent Sydney-siders at the time and he also was responsible for the foyer interiors of several high-class Hotels in the 1960’s. Duffecy’s work shows highly-refined design skill and at the time was not readily available.
This sofa has not only survived over 60 years of use, it has thrived and has grown in value over of the years (particularly over the last 25 or so years). Items like this have inherent value and there is very little modern furniture out there that has the same construction qualities and design concept. This style lounge is distinctly vintage but the design aesthetic is timeless. Furniture in this Danish modern style has been very popular for at least 25 years now so has come to supersede trends. There’s no better way I can think of to invest in your home and in the future of the planet.

This John Duffecy day bed / lounge sofa is in brilliant condition for its age. The timber frame is solid and sturdy with NO movement in any joint, NO wobbles, NO structural flaws and NO repairs. I’ve carefully inspected this piece all over (and have had 22-years experience doing this). This piece has been extremely well looked-after over the years and is completely solid, strong, sturdy and is free from repairs. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The frame is in excellent condition overall cosmetically. This piece will have some minor knocks and small bumps but nothing that's noticed or spoils the presentation (the timber presents incredibly well for a piece of this era). The webbing is in okay condition. It is doing the job and the comfort is okay but this sofa would benefit from re-webbing. This is easy to do yourself. The webbing itself costs about $60 for a sofa like this- then you'd need an upholstery stapler (about $35 from Bunnings) and a couple of spare hours. The cushioning is in excellent condition. The cover on the back cushion is a little misshapen- the slant on the back is not as good as should be. My vendor arranged for 2 people to continue getting this cover back in its rightful place and told me it's now sitting a lot better than when the photos were taken. The big plus is the upholstery- this is a modern, neutral choice that marries up with the design aesthetic of the frame perfectly. This is a highly quality textile- the texture and tone is stylish and sophisticated. The upholstery is in close to new condition- it is clean, presents extremely well, is top-quality and completely serviceable. Measurements. Across- 204 cm. Depth- 77.5 cm. Total height- 73.5 cm. The section to be used as a bed measures cm X cm. ONE. FOR FREIGHT- about 1.14 cubic metres. Read my 1200+ ebay feedback comments (100 or so from repeat customers) to be assured that this lounge sofa is as described and I won’t stock items unless they are in excellent condition.
