Provenance and Background Info for the October Vase

(Written in 2022)

A Kosta Boda “October” Vase designed by Kjell Engman 1982. This is the LARGEST size in this series standing 22.5cm in height (and 12.5cm across). This vase is vintage (early-1980’s) and none of them in this series are still available through Kosta Boda so they have strong collector appeal. Engman has captured the essence of Europe late in autumn so well in this piece. I love its “watery” feel. Everything is “washed out” lacking definition which gives it the feel of autumn. There is an impending starkness there as well with winter around the corner but the piece is still uplifting with birds taking flight.

It’s rare for a piece to capture the essence of something so simply yet so well. Kjell Engman has been one of the most influential glass designers in the world. His one-off pieces can fetch tens of thousands. Kosta Boda pieces can and usually do increase in value from the original ticket price in future years and the “October” series is now over 35 years old. This is a piece bound to tell stories to generations to come. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
