Background Info and Provenance

A Vicke Lindstrand, “Cat And the Net” vase signed to the base Kosta 2456. This is an iconic Lindstrand piece and the only one I’ve ever seen in the flesh. I think the reason for its popularity is the story the piece tells. There is a message behind it and part of the appeal is guessing what Lindstrand was communicating.

This was a tough piece to photograph and even with the work I did I still don’t feel it was captured as well as possible.

Because this is such an iconic piece and it’s rare it fetches more than most Lindstrand pieces. Free Forms USA- has a similar vase (but double in size) for $2200.

There’s a lot of work involved in creating this piece. Being a 1950’s piece, the engraving was done by hand. The vase features copper wheel engraving, a technique that became popular in the 1940’s. I’m pretty certain this is an early 1950’s piece when Vicke Lindstrand first joined Kosta. This would explain the unusual numbering. In the early 50’s Lindstrand’s numbering system wouldn’t have yet been established. Also Lindstrand created engraved pieces prior to starting at Kosta. He did pieces in the 1940’s at Orrefors. In the “Scandinavian Glass- Smoke And Ice” reference book there is a Lindstrand piece that uses the exact same technique as this piece but it has a woman amongst nets with a basket on her head. That piece is dated 1951. I would say this is very early 50’s. The piece shown in the “Smoke and Ice” book has a value of $4000-$5000. This one with the cat has obvious investment appeal.

Kosta Boda is probably the most successful glassworks ever and this is one of their earlier pieces well before Kosta and Boda amalgamated. The design captivates just as much today as it did back then. Instead of adding to global pollution consider buying vintage- there are very few better ways to invest in your home and our environment.
