Background Info and Provenance

A LARGE Vicke Lindstrand Dark Magic vase engraved to the base (17.5cm in height). This larger size (LH 1606) is very hard to find and is the third one I’ve seen in Australia in 17 years of trading. When packed this piece weighs over 2kg which makes them costly to bring into Australia. Dark Magic vases are valued by Judith Miller at $US500-$US550 each in her reference book “20thCentury Glass” (approx. AU $620). This vase was designed in 1958 and has become a design classic. Today Vicke Lindstrand’s work is some of the most highly collectable mid-century glass in the world.

His designs have a supposed simplicity that always make you do a double-take. The Dark Magic design is aptly named. It has a magical quality and changes depending on the lighting and angle you view it. Sometimes you’re seeing crescent moons that are light in colour, at other times they’re dark. There are times you think you’re looking into the night sky and others into the deepest caverns of the ocean. Sometimes it looks black, others it looks blue and others, purple. (This is because it’s tinted crystal- not glass.)

This piece was made by Bengt Heinz with a bent glassblowing pipe that he developed for creating these off-centre pieces. The design is shown in the 1959 Kosta catalogue. I remember reading somewhere about the fame Bengt Heinz came to receive for his work and how this was unusual because usually the accolades were reserved for designers.

HAND-MADE art that’s European and over 50 years old is virtually never found in Australia. The last one of these I had (back in 2012) sold immediately. This piece is one to be passed from one generation to the next. The design captivates just as much today as it did back then. Investing in vintage designs is not only a smart investment financially but also helps lower your carbon footprint.
