Background Information and Provenance

Written in 2020

This beautifully-restored writing desk was manufactured by a Melbourne company in the late-1950s or early-1960s. I’d say it was done by one of the boutique firms operating at the time as I haven’t come across this design before. The manufacturer’s stamp is still there in the top drawer, but time has made it too difficult to read fully. It has a Rosando Brothers air to it with its splayed angular legs and pull-out extensions, but I don’t think it was done by Rosando. What is clear though is the quality of the piece. Beautifully constructed of SOLID Tasmanian Myrtle (no shitty Parker chipboard & veneer here), the side panels of the desk are veneer (over timber), the top, drawer fronts, slide-out extensions and trims are solid hardwood. This piece was built to stand the test of time and has! Many mid-century pieces have been made out of chipboard with a thin teak veneer finish that can lift, bubble and chip- NOT this one. The solid timber construction here means it’s ready to be of service in its next happy home … and I can also see this one being passed onto yet another generation too! Good honest construction using REAL timber- no plastic laminate here and it hasn’t been flat-packed overseas and shipped here wrapped in copious amounts of bubble-wrap and cardboard that ends up as our landfill. This piece hails back to a by-gone era that we’d love to see Australia return back to! Constructive industry and meaningful employment for our people.

But it’s the practicality on offer here that reigns supreme- plenty of storage- the big drawcard is that this is intelligent storage too. There are normal-sized drawers plus a file-drawer- this design feature is commonly sought-after but rarely found. And those pull-out side extensions … just perfect! Get that little workstation-thing happening in your home with all the space your need. And at the end of the day simply file it all away to turn your workstation into a peaceful sanctuary- use your computer in your leisure-time without work calling for you! Let the kids use the computer after work-hours without worrying about them interfering with your work.

With the changes the world has seen in 2020, this type of thing has been in high demand but getting desks with this level of appeal has been a challenge to say the least. iNVISeDGE followers have been requesting vintage desks to use at home during recent lock-downs but they’re just not coming up. Who would want to let something like this go in these times? A new seller who will be selling regularly in iNVISeDGE presented us with this find- I fast-tracked her to the front of the queue. Miss this piece and who knows how long before something similar will come your way again!

And lucky for you, all the hard work has already been done too. The stunning Tasmanian Myrtle seems to just glow in the light. Our vendor has loved breathing new life and love into this one. The timber-top, drawer fronts and handles have all been lovingly stripped, sanded-back and coated with three coats of highly durable Haymes Tung Oil Finish, a product that will ensure that the timber stays looking as perfect as it does today for a lifetime. What we love most about a Tung Oil Finish is that there’s no colour stain whatsoever in the product—the Tung oil draws out the existing oils in the wood to reveal its own natural beauty. Our vendor gets really excited every time she’s about to apply this product to sanded wood because no-one ever knows exactly what will be revealed—the colours and depth of shine that come up can be quite unexpected. In this case the SOLID timber has a golden-honey glow, it is luminous and absolutely stunning! This is nature at its finest and the love and attention given to the piece by a REAL person (as opposed to a machine) further heightens the appeal.

Quality vintage desks made by artisans are rare as hen’s teeth these days- flat-packed modern plastic-laminate things are often seen out in the weather waiting for council curb-side collection. This piece represents a smart financial investment, an investment into the future of this planet (after-all it has already evaded landfill for about 60 years!) plus when you buy through iNVISeDGE you’re supporting SMALL business and a future where local constructive industry is valued again. It’s a win for you, for our earth AND our local community!

A list of detailed condition / construction questions with answers given by our vendor ... _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Are the full drawers Tasmanian Myrtle or just the drawer fronts? It's hard to be sure in your photos. Are the drawer fronts just nailed on? Only the drawer fronts are hardwood. The sides are pine. The fronts are attached with dovetail joints. We can't see what the drawers look like inside. This needs to be discussed in our condition paragraph. The three left hand drawers and the file drawer insides are very clean and neat. The top Right drawer has some ink stains--this is probably from the storage on fountain pens. Are there any cracks or damage in the drawers- any movement in the drawer joint areas? Drawer joints are all sound and solid. Do all the drawers slide in and out easily? All drawers are sliding well. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Are all the drawers solid and sturdy? Will they all hold plenty of stuff without straining or "complaining"? Absolutely yes, I was using the desk myself for a year and really loaded the drawers up! Are the drawer bottoms all holding up well? Yes, all sound and solid. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Handles all attached securely? Absolutely. I screwed them in myself. Underneath ... any cracks around the joint areas in the legs? Any movement in the legs? No cracks in the joints. There is a tiny bit of movement in the legs, but that is due to the style of constructing with the splayed design. The desk sits absolutely solidly when in position, but needs to be treated with respect when being moved--you can't drag this type of furniture or twist and strain the joints--but these are points I would make on any mid century piece. Beautifully crafted furniture should be moved with some sense anyway. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Any cracks in the construction anywhere? Particularly underneath the desk which has not been shown. There are no cracks in the construction, the desk is good and solid and has been carefully restored. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The separation between the top timber panels- is there any movement in those panels? There is a 3-4 mm separation in the top timber panels, but no movement. Is there anything else I need to know in order to represent this piece as if it was my own piece? The slide-out desk panels are secured to the desk with dowell, and when they are extended they need to have a wedge inserted underneath to fasten them securely and make them sit in place. These will be supplied in the top drawers of the piece. I could take a photo of how this works if a customer needs this. Or even a little video? It is pretty simple. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Measurements.
