Background Info and Provenance
A PAIR Perspex / Lucite lamp bases made by Le Dauphin of France. Both lamps still retain the original maker’s plaque. This pair dates to the 1970’s. Located in Saint-Marcellin, in the region of Dauphiné, the Le Dauphin brand was created by Maurice Tournu in 1966. By the 1970’s this French brand had become an international sensation in the area of lighting. They started out creating lamp-shades and quickly moved into lamps. The vintage mid-century pieces by Le Dauphin are highly collectable but rarely seen. I’ve never seen any others in this exact design before (even online- I’ve had these several years now). At the time of writing there were 7 vintage Le Dauphin listings online I could find in the world (most on 1stdibs / 1st dibs). I have included a screenshot showing prices of vintage Le Dauphin on 1stdibs (average value- AU $1,300 PER LAMP) which would put this pair at about AU $2,600. Two of those listings are ATTRIBUTED TO Le Dauphin only (they don’t have labels). The pair of Sphinx lamps shown in the screenshot have labels exactly the same as these- I’ve included a screenshot of this but if you can’t find this it hasn’t fitted into the listing on the platform you’ve come through.
These have a great style- they have a mid-century flavour but at the same time timeless, classic looks. This pair is perfect for the professional interior designer (or budding designer too!). They’re chic, eye-catching but still restrained so won’t completely dominate your space but make no mistake they’ll get attention. When the light catches these they shine like crystal. ALL vintage Perspex / lucite lamps are ridiculously expensive and seldom seen. Most were made in the USA in 1970’s so very few show up in Australia- this pair from FRANCE is even rarer here- I doubt you’ll see another pair of these ever again.
After modern lamps have lost favour and ended up as landfill, these Le Dauphin lamps from the 1970’s will be telling stories to a new generation. There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint.

Please study our photos for details of the condition. The lamps are clearly shown in our photos- click on the Magnifying Tool and then once it's at full size, click inside the image again to super-size it. Then click on your mouse and scroll over the whole photo closely. Obviously nothing is being hidden in our photos. Each lamp shows signs of aging but no noticeable damage. NO chips, NO cracks, NO breakage, NO significant scratches. The top part of the lamp that holds the bulb has split on one lamp (as is shown in the photos). A few rounds of sticky tape held this section together. As you can see in the photos this was sufficient to keep that section secure when the lampshade was later added. I think sticky tape will do the trick but if not 2-part epoxy glue with something to hold the glue where you want it (sticky tape on top of the epoxy glue?) will do the job. This area is never noticed because the lampshade hides it which will make fixing it even easier. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Measurements. Height- approx 55cm including the top of the light fitting (but not with a bulb in it). The square base is 17cm X 17cm. Please note that these don't fit in our decorative arts cupboard so I've had to store them elsewhere. I've got them wrapped tightly in plastic bags with tape secured around them to protect them from dust etc. I measured them with these plastic bags still on but was as careful with the measurements as I could be without cutting the bags off. The measurements do NOT include the lamp-shades- the bases only have been measured.
PICK-UP . . . from 30 or 40 minutes North of BRISBANE city is accepted but postage is preferred as my home is hard to find. Because of this I will nominate a friend or family member for you to collect the item from if you need collection. Pick-up in person must be worked out prior to purchase- thank you. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ POSTAGE is offered internationally. All our Decorative Arts pieces are delivered through AUSTRALIA POST. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ POSTAGE ESTIMATES. . . . ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ To BRISBANE- most of our pieces cost $15 - $18 to send. . . To SYDNEY or MELBOURNE- Small Vase- around $20 - $23, Medium Vase- around $20 - $25, Large Vase- around $24 - $30. Let us know if you need an EXACT COST for postage prior to purchase. The above postage estimates include $2.95 for a signature on delivery. . . INSURANCE against being lost or broken in transit up to the value of $200 is included in the estimates above. If your vase is cheaper or more expensive than $200 this will effect your postage fee slightly. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A BOXING FEE of $3.00 is included in the fee above to cover the cost of searching for and storing used packing materials. With the millions of cardboard boxes that end up as landfill every year we don’t believe in supporting the manufacture of boxes for post. Instead of buying new boxes and packing materials and passing this cost onto our customers we spend considerable time sourcing used boxes and then fashioning boxes to fit each item. We do the same for bubble-wrap and foam pieces. This requires a large investment of time, energy, ingenuity, organization and storage space- it is much easier and cheaper to buy new packing materials but I can’t justify taking the easy way out when so much packing material ends up polluting our earth. Our $3.00 charge does little to pay for the time (and storage) needed do this and to pack your item (there is also the time needed to get your package to the post office). This is something we’re happy to do for our customers and the environment. We appreciate your support in this area.
