Background Info and Provenance

Description written in 2020

A Kosta Boda sculpture with the plastic decal and also signed B Vallien to the base. These are RARE. I’ve never seen another in Australia and doubt I ever will. They have never been retailed in Australia (I got this from America) and because it weighs a hefty 3.34kg (!) it wouldn’t be accepted by several international postal systems and even if countries do accept an item of this weight postage of this piece into Australia will be around $130 from most countries.

This piece is intriguing and makes you wonder. The refraction of light within the item causes the image on the back surface to be reflected various times. As your eyes move, the horse moves. A piece like this could only be the creation of a genius artisan. Vallien immediately captures you but what I love most is that he holds your attention with this piece. He’s held my attention for 9 months now whilst I’ve had this one on display at home. Why is there a man swimming inside a horse’s gut? Or is the man just floating? Why is the man made of copper? Why is there a “jellybean” above the horse’s back? Is that a pair of eyes inside the horse? Is that a brain in there? The questions just keep coming.

I have enjoyed meditating on what Vallien was trying to convey. Maybe it was his intention to raise more questions than answers.

This is art in the true sense of the word. This is a piece that’s bound to rise in value in the future. Most Kosta Boda glass may increase in value in time but with this I have no doubt that it will. There are not many around. When they were selling new, they were usually $US525 – $US604. This is in the USA. With postage to Australia this means they were worth about $AU770 – $AU1050 new to an Australian buyer. Art pieces in this price range don’t sell in large quantities. This boosts the investment appeal but personally I believe that the best investment appeal you can get is buying something you really love because if you really love it other people will. (Buying a respected brand that’s signed or labelled is also just as important.)

After most modern décor has ended up in the bin this hand-made piece from the world famous Bertil Vallien for the Kosta Boda factory (Sweden) will only become more valued as it changes hands and eventually reaches new generations. There is no better way to invest in your home and reduce landfill.

This piece is in excellent condition for its age with no noticeable condition flaws to report at all. NO chips, NO cracks, NO repairs. I bought it second-hand so it has a couple of VERY minor signs of use but nothing that’s noticed AT ALL. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ This sculpture is super-thick is (approx. 7.5cm thick) and has a height of 12cm and about 20cm across. (It weighs a hefty 3.34kg!) Read my 1010+ ebay feedback comments (ALL for vintage furniture/decor SALES). This is your guarantee that I strive to describe all my items as accurately as I can and will not stock items unless they are in excellent condition.
PICK-UP . . . from 30 or 40 minutes North of BRISBANE city is accepted but postage is preferred as my home is hard to find. Because of this I will nominate a friend or family member for you to collect the item from if you need collection. Pick-up in person must be worked out prior to purchase- thank you. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ POSTAGE is offered internationally. All our Decorative Arts pieces are delivered through AUSTRALIA POST. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ POSTAGE ESTIMATES. . . . ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ To BRISBANE- most of our pieces cost $15 - $18 for registered post. . . To SYDNEY or MELBOURNE- Small Vase- around $20 - $23, Medium Vase- around $20 - $25, Large Vase- around $24 - $30. Let us know if you need an EXACT COST for postage prior to purchase. The above postage estimates include $2.95 for a signature on delivery. . . INSURANCE against being lost or broken in transit up to the value of $200 is included in the estimates above. If your vase is cheaper or more expensive than $200 this will effect your postage fee slightly. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A BOXING FEE of $3.00 is included in the fee above to cover the cost of searching for and storing used packing materials. With the millions of cardboard boxes that end up as landfill every year we don’t believe in supporting the manufacture of boxes for post. Instead of buying new boxes and packing materials and passing this cost onto our customers we spend considerable time sourcing used boxes and then fashioning boxes to fit each item. We do the same for bubble-wrap and foam pieces. This requires a large investment of time, energy, ingenuity, organization and storage space- it is much easier and cheaper to buy new packing materials but I can’t justify taking the easy way out when so much packing material ends up polluting our earth. Our $3.00 charge does little to pay for the time (and storage) needed do this and to pack your item (there is also the time needed to get your package to the post office). This is something we’re happy to do for our customers and the environment. We appreciate your support in this area.
