This Mexican Movie poster is for a film called “Linda Mujer” (or “Pretty Woman” in English) starring Rosa Carmina, Roberto Canedo and Rudolfo Acosta. In this romantic drama directed by Miguel Contreras Torres, Cuban actress Rosa Carmina is the love interest and nightclub dancer that falls into a torrid affair with her protagonist. The beautiful design is typical of the creative artwork often associated with the posters of the time. This poster is part of a set of posters purchased twenty years ago in Mexicio City from a gent who owned a cinema in Mexico through the thirties, forties and fifties.

Miguel Contreras Torres was a major producer and director of movies in Mexico’s golden age of cinema from the 1930’s to the 50’s. Many Mexican movie posters of the period will bear his name. Mexican movie posters reached their golden age between WWII and 1957 with some of the best designs featuring the stars of the time including Cantinflas (the Mexican Groucho Marx). They stand apart because of the unique artwork, typically incorporating dramatic colours and shading. Unlike US equivalents artists were encouraged to sign their movie posters which is possibly why they stand apart as unique works of art.

Vintage movie posters look amazing in any retro-inspired interior- in a retro bar area that look particularly at home.

This work is in excellent original condition considering its age and delicate nature. Mexican movie posters from the 1950s and earlier were printed on inferior thin paper that tends to contain a lot of acid from the natural pulp it was made from. Because of these acids, many of the posters from this period will show browning as this one does. It shows that what you have is the real deal. It's possible to have the poster washed in a alkali aqueous solution and backed with linen to brighten it and preserve it, but many collectors choose not to do this as it makes the poster look too 'new'.
