Background Info and Provenance

(Written in 2013- some information/anecdotes are time sensitive)

A cool whimsical lion HAND-MADE and created by Lisa Larsson (Larson) of Sweden. This piece is a newer release (but still has age to it- it’d be around 20 years old). The vintage ones were made by Gustavsberg in the 1960’s- this piece was made by Keramikstudion Gustavsberg which was founded in 1992 by Lisa Larson and her two assistants Franco Nicolosi and Siv Solin. A team of master craftsmen and craftswomen produced Lisa Larson’s designs on a small scale, carrying on a tradition of ceramic mould making, glazing and painting. Be careful when buying these- most sellers fail to mention that many on offer were not done in the 1960’s. (There is an Australian seller that does this.) The Australian seller does not offer this design though- this design with the bird on the back is much harder to come across. This is the only Lisa Larson piece like this I’ve ever seen in Australia and on a worldwide scale I’ve only ever come across a handful. The spherical lions are much easier to find and are still being made- I’m pretty sure this design was discontinued years ago.

I fell in love with Lisa Larson’s work the second I came across a lion a few years back (in a photograph). I’ve since come across hundreds of photos of her work but have only experienced them in the flesh recently when I had some sent from Sweden. This piece so friendly and fun it attracts attention from anywhere in the room- it’s artfully drawn and incised decoration (by hand). It instantly draws you in and captivates.

This Lisa Larson piece is one of my personal favourites and was on display at home for a long time- I’ve since moved house and there’s nowhere to display him so I’ve reluctantly offered him for sale. (I doubt I’ll see another one again.)

Lisa Larson has made it big-time in Sweden but she has a large international following also. She recently turned her hand to children’s books which are winning a whole new swarm of fans. This lion is part of the Africa series and was designed in the 1960’s. There are a variety of other animals in the set- Google Lisa Larson to see the amazing body work from this inspiring creator.

Lisa Larson’s international following means this piece has strong investment appeal- I have no doubt one of these will be worth more years from now. This hand-made piece will continue to captivate and tell stories for generations to come.
