Provenance and Background Info

(Written in 2021)

A stunning feature chair by Lystolet, a high-end Swedish furniture maker in the 1970’s. Lystolet items are RARE. I can’t find any of these chairs for sale in the world at the time of writing. I found this design in a two-seater in Europe (see the screenshot provided)- it’s AU $2615 in Spain plus $800 for shipping to Australia… but I don’t like the 2-seater- the proportions are wrong- it looks cumbersome to me. I’ve never seen one of these chairs in Australia before. I love this style- chic, minimalist yet it still pops! I wouldn’t like it half as much without the ebonised frame- against the Cognac (rust-coloured) leather this piece is certainly noticed but it’d work nicely in any space- all class. It has a minimalist look but the cognac leather contrasts with the frame giving this one a unique slant.

This is FULL-GRAIN LEATHER which is top of the range as far as QUALITY is concerned- the cost of proper full-grain leather means that it is rarely used in furniture anymore. The chair shows only minor use … after 45+ years! This leather is in line with the quality of all high-end Scandinavian manufacturers of the era (such as Westnofa and Vatne Mobler who made the Falcon chairs). This frame is also VERY sturdy and structurally brilliant after about 45 years of use.

The investment appeal of this one is obvious. Falcon chairs used to fetch about $1000-$1100 each back in 2001 when I first started iNVISeDGE. These days they fetch around $2400 each- I’ve  even seen them priced up to $2700 each in some design shops in Sydney and Melbourne. I think this design is at least in line with the Falcon (but MUCH rarer). The Falcon also has a canvas sling seat which can have problems after 40+ years (repairing it can be expensive- this frame is full timber with elastic straps in the seat section which are easy and cheap to replace if ever needed- the cushion is loose so it simply lifts off the frame.) This piece is under-priced here and is bound to increase in value over the years. The design is timeless and the construction is A1!

To top it off, the comfort is great- perfect angles to support the full back, the leather is soft and supple and the seat is a good size.

You don’t need to spend $7000 or more in the design shops and wonder what quality you’ll be getting. This vintage chair has held up incredibly well with use- the photos are irrefutable proof of the quality you’re getting. Lystolet is an internationally-celebrated brand and will continue to tell stories from this generation to the next. Items like this are a great financial and environmental investment for your home.

In the same league as Artek, Anibou, Westnofa and exceeds Tessa, Parker, FLER and Danish Deluxe pieces.

2105 and earlier

This chair is in excellent condition for its age. (Produced in the 1970’s.) The frame is solid, very sturdy with NO breaks, NO repairs, NO movement in any joint area, NO cracks in the timber (nothing of the sort). The timber has a few minor surface marks over the years but nothing that’s noticed (as our photos show). There’s no cosmetic damage to the frame that stands out- just very minor signs of age and use as you’d expect of a chair that’s over 45 years old. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ This leather is PREMIUM full-grain leather. Some modern “leathers” disintegrate in years. Not this. It’s beautifully soft and supple, in excellent condition with nothing specific worth noting. The leather has NO holes, NO cracks through the leather, NO splits, NO significant wear, NO noticeable scratches, NO bad creases (just minor creasing and minor patina / wear to the paint finish to be expected of quality leather that’s 45+ years old and some minor grazes if you want to really scrutinize it closer.) ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The straps under the seat have been recently replaced by a professional so they're basically new. The chair is very comfortable to sit in. The angles are great- this piece holds you in the perfect seating position. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The zip on the reverse side of the seat cushion had busted over the last 45 years but this has just been replaced by a professional so the zipper is also new. This chair did have armrest covers on when it came in- I don’t them so I took them off for the majority of the photos. They date the design and detract from the timeless genius of the piece. I prefer it without the armrest covers but the armrest-covers are still there as shown in our array of photos. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Measurements.
