Background Info and Provenance

(Written in 2025. Some information may be time-sensitive.)

Maigon Daga was an artist born in Latvia in 1923. When war broke out in Europe in the 1940’s, Daga fled to Australia in 1948 where he attended the Adelaide School of Art, studying sculpture. He then sold art pottery in Australia for some years before emigrating to the Minneapolis / St Paul area in America (USA). His early Australian pieces fetch good money and attract serious collectors. After moving to Australia, Maigon Daga soon concentrated his talents on hand-crafted pottery animals. He created a huge assortment of forms. Some are rarer than others. His rare pieces are fetching big prices these days. This bison / bull is particularly rare. I’ve been following Daga’s work for years and have never come across another one of these- not even in photos. Maigon Daga died in 2001, leaving behind a legacy of collectable art.

Often spelt Magonis by Americans, Maigon Daga’s full name was Maigonis.

This would be a great gift for someone under the Taurus star-sign. It’s signed DAGA in the distinctive way all these pieces were signed. There’s an Alvino Bagni bull with a similar amount of handiwork in it on 1stdibs at the moment for a staggering AU$3,887! (See the screenshot provided.) Another Italian bull by Bruno Gambone was recently bid up to AU$1,525 on ebay. Bitossi bulls which are a LOT common than this are now fetching over AU $1,200- I haven’t had a Bitossi bull for 3 years now though. At this price, it’s an obvious INVESTMENT- there’s big tabs on the rarer Maigon Daga pieces and this bull / bison definitely fits into that category.

Maigon Daga’s work is well worth watching, particularly his pieces that are virtually never seen. His work is truly exceptional and has a magic that very few pottery artists possess. Apart from the beautiful form of all his pieces, what sets it apart is the organic, earth-tone glazes. The unique finish of his pieces gives his work an archaeological flavour that puts it into the “timeless” category. Maigon Daga’s work will never date and is bound to be passed from one generation to the next, gathering more stories with each changing of hands.  There’s no better way I can think of to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
