Background Info and Provenance
An art glass vase made BY HAND by popular duo Mark Galton and Tina Cooper. This piece isn’t signed but I’m 100% certain it’s a Martini piece- I’ve had a couple of others in the past that were signed and very similar to this one. The base is what gives it away- all Martini pieces are like this. The person I bought this from (who was a very experienced dealer) marketed it as Colin Heaney- it’s not- no Colin Heaney piece has a base like this. I’ve sold a lot of Heaney’s work over the years. People think that Heaney’s work is more valuable because he is more widely known. This is not really the case. Martini pieces are much harder to find. Heaney’s work went for 23 years- Martini’s went for about 5 years. Heaney also employed other artists at his studio and there were pieces made at his studio that were not made by him which further increased his output. This is not so for Martini glass.
This is certainly their work. The partnership between Galton & Cooper really worked- Martini items are stand-out pieces of art. They easily compete with Colin Heaney’s work- many pieces exceed the magic Heaney created. This piece is free-flowing and I’d say an experimental piece. I’ve never seen another like it but the elements are all Martini’s own. It has a brilliant flow of energy- it’s expressive and has a creative energy a machine-made piece will never have.
Martini Glass Studios was established in the Hinterland regions of the Sunshine Coast during the mid-1980s. The two artists eventually closed the studio around 1995 to continue their own individual career as artists. Galton passed away just recently and Cooper continues to work on the Sunshine Coast. Cooper’s career has gone to new heights- her work is some of the most celebrated in Australia and is only becoming more valued as the years go on.
Some Martini pieces were signed with a rather rudimentary signature but I’ve seen other Martini pieces at antique fairs around Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast with no signature. The work is unmistakable.
Art-glass pumped out of factories in the thousands is cheap but rarely ignites any inspiration or passion- most ends up in the trash after a few years because after the trend has moved on the piece is basically worthless. If you believe artist’s work should be done by people and not machines consider investing in hand-made art. There are very few better ways to invest in your home, reduce your carbon footprint and create stories to be passed from this generation to the next.
PICK-UP . . . from 30 or 40 minutes North of BRISBANE city is accepted but postage is preferred as my home is hard to find. Because of this I will nominate a friend or family member for you to collect the item from if you need collection. With the millions of cardboard boxes that end up as landfill every year we don’t believe in supporting the manufacture of boxes for post. Instead of buying new boxes and packing materials and passing this cost onto our customers we spend considerable time sourcing used boxes and then fashioning boxes to fit each item. We do the same for bubble-wrap and foam pieces. This requires a large investment of time, energy, ingenuity, organization and storage space- it is much easier and cheaper to buy new packing materials but I can’t justify taking the easy way out when so much packing material ends up polluting our earth. Our $3.00 charge does little to pay for the time (and storage) needed do this and to pack your item (there is also the time needed to get your package to the post office). This is something we’re happy to do for our customers and the environment. We appreciate your support in this area.

We send photographic ID of the store owner (Michael Grealy) to all customers at the point of sale, along with media articles about iNVISeDGE with photos of Michael Grealy in them (most of these articles are about 10 years old).
