Background Info and Provenance

(Written in 2018).

A LARGE art-glass vase HAND-CREATED by highly-acclaimed Italian glassworks, Mazzega. I love feel of this piece- it almost looks like an underwater wonderworld with coloured fish streaking past, drifting jellyfish and of course sunlight glittering on the ocean surface above. I love how the decoration is indistinct so that the splotches of the reverse side create dark shadows on the front. The piece has depth and though at first glance it looks similar to other art-glass out there it stands apart the longer you experience it.

Mazzega has earned an enviable position in the art-glass world- some of their chandeliers fetch AU $20 000 and more. Their art-glass vases are rare- various internet sources say they were done by Master, Fulvio Bianconi though I’d say others also contributed over the years. The Mazzega glassworks started in 1946 and still operates to this day. Mazzega is an institution on the island of Murano in Italy and attracts thousands of visitors each year. I’ve seen recent Mazzega pieces with the Vetri Murano label on which GUARANTEES that Mazzega art glass is created from traditional artistic methods born and developed over a thousand years in the island of Murano. Only companies producing artistic glass on the island of Murano can apply for the Vetri trademark. This guarantees the quality and HAND-MADE craftsmanship of their art. This piece was made before the late 1980’s because it doesn’t have the Vetri label. I’ve included a screenshot in this listing of another Mazzega piece I found online that has an identical label to this one. The ribboning/inclamo technique used in that vase was most popular in the 1960’s- my feeling is that the piece on offer here is also late 1960’s. It certainly has some age to it.

This type of thing is virtually never found in Australia. I’ve never seen another like it. It would be accepted by most high-end auction houses operating in Australia. But at the end of the day if you’re going to invest in art it has to speak to you and inspire you. This HAND-MADE piece has already inspired people for around 40 to 50 years and after much modern home décor has ended up as landfill it will be passed onto another generation. I believe there’s no better way to invest in your home and our environment.

(THIS LISTING PRICE IS FOR ONE BLUE VASE ONLY with splotches of colours. THE PIECE SHOWN IN EVERY PHOTO.)
