Background Info and Provenance

(This description was written in 2021.)

A HAND-CRAFTED pottery Trojan Horse done by famous Australian artist, Gus McLaren. This is the largest McLaren piece I’ve ever had in my collection (and the first I’ve ever listed in my online store). I’m reluctant to part with him but the only way I can stay in business is by selling things! McLaren pieces have steadily increased in value for the whole 20 years I’ve been in this business. I remember them selling in auction centres in Sydney back in my early days for about $300 each. These days they sell for triple what they sold for back then. Why- you may ask? McLaren pieces are some of the best Australian decor pieces ever made. I think this is much nicer than any Bitossi horse and Bitossi horses are now fetching up to AU $1200. These vintage pieces are getting very hard to get as well- collectors hold tightly onto their McLaren pieces- over the years as pieces get broken or lost the value of these continues to go UP!

There’s not a lot of Australian pottery out there of this callibre- the design, workmanship and patience required to create something like this is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Hand-crafted Australian art is a dying industry- if you believe decor pieces should come from the hearts and hands of PEOPLE and not machines in China, put your money where your mouth is! The added benefit is that pieces like this tend to INCREASE in value over the years as well whilst you get to enjoy having them in your home.

I can’t believe the clamouring that occurred for the first Ellis piece I put up from a recent consignment of Ellis pieces I had. Miss this McLaren piece and I doubt you’ll come across another again. It’s a wonderful piece of vintage Australian design history. It’s classy but fun and has real presence- because it’s big it can also stand on a mid-century sideboard and not looked swamped. I also love the colouring of this one too- it’s earthy and natural so would be much easier to place in any home (compared to the vibrant colouring of the Bitossi Rimini Blu pieces).

This stunning pottery horse created by HAND by GUS McLAREN, has been around for more than a season and certainly more than a few issues of your favourite interior design magazine. If it’s still in vogue after 5 to 6 decades it will always be. After mass-produced modern pieces have ended up as landfill, this vintage décor piece will be passed onto yet another generation. There’s no better way to invest in your home and help protect our planet for future generations. INVESTING in hand-crafted items is a small but important way we can all help change our children’s future.
