Background Info and Provenance
A stunning Tessa sofa purchased from Tessa in 2017. (I’m pretty sure this model is called the Tessa Wellington.) This suite came out of a deceased estate and was used by one person for about 5 years. Thanks to the quality of the suite all 3 pieces still present virtually as new. I love the colours of this one- they’re timeless but also promote a modern, contemporary look. Most Tessa furniture is dark and bold. These lighter tones pare back the boldness and create a minimalist Scandinavian aesthetic. I like the segmented cushioning as well- this further contributes to the refined, minimalist appearance.
The value of Tessa furniture has sky-rocketed in recent years. The reason so many people want this furniture is simple- it is some of the MOST COMFORTABLE lounge furniture you’ll ever find- Tessa furniture has the right level of plushness and GREAT seating support. Notice the angle of the seat here- it slants back to hold you in the best possible seating position. The slanted-back seat angle is MUCH more expensive to build (they did it this way because it’s the very best way to make lounge furniture). You’ll also notice the higher back on Tessa designs too. This gives your back and neck additional support, making it much more comfortable than virtually all modern lounge furniture which is nearly always low-line (with a LOW back).
After a 50-year stint in the Australian Marketplace, Tessa Furniture died late in 2019. It’s a sorry state of affairs when an Australian business can no longer do what they do so well because of cheap imports that often end up as landfill. And this is the very reason why Tessa died. Their designs are so well-made that the second-hand market for Tessa pieces ended up becoming more sought-after than new Tessa Furniture. And who can blame people going straight to the second-hand market for designs such as these? The QUALITY is so exceptional that second-hand Tessa suites often still look close to new after 20, 30, 40 even 50 years of use. In this listing you’re getting a classic Tessa swivel chair that’s in AMAZING used condition BUT about ONE QUARTER of the price Tessa retailed these for in 2019. The investment appeal here should be obvious to anyone with half a brain!
This suite is upholstered in QUALITY FULL-GRAIN Aspen leather. You have to be careful buying Tessa Furniture. Tessa went through a stage when customers could opt to use cheap leathers. We’ve all seen what these “leathers” do- some just disintegrate completely within 10 years. ASPEN is a QUALITY leather by Moore & Giles of Germany. ASPEN is the World’s first and only leather to receive a Declare Label. The Declare Label is a tool to show customers that the product is one that can be trusted from a sustainability, toxicity, pollution and environmental stand-point. Crafted from premium hides, Aspen is an award-winning leather containing no plastics. Aspen Leathers are FULL-GRAIN leather- this leather is THICK and DURABLE. If you clean this furniture after heavy use and condition it 3 or 4 times each year, full-grain leather usually lasts 50 years (but often much longer- I’ve sold many leather lounge suites in the past that were 60 years old and had nothing wrong with the leather).
This is one of Tessa’s modern suites- it was sold just before they went our of business. Tessa Furniture has been synonymous with QUALITY for over 50 years. The construction of the frame is second to none- the quality is exactly the same as all their newer models. The ASPEN LEATHER is top of the line. You are buying some of the best lounge furniture ever made, in IMMACULATE condition at a fraction of what this cost new. After much of the world’s furniture ends up as landfill, this suite will be passed onto another user and eventually a whole new generation. Now that Tessa Furniture is not made anymore, I can’t see any reason why this Australian design won’t slowly increase in value towards what it was selling for new (ie. about $8,000 for the full suite). There’s no better way I can think of to invest in your home, the future of our environment and small business.
