Love items like this in this lighter-colour leather. This leather-tone suits this design perfectly- these are the only ones in this colour I’ve ever come across in this design.
LOCATION– being sold UNDER CONSIGNMENT by a regular iNVISeDGE seller in Mont Albert North, MELBOURNE.
Provenance and Background Info
(This description was primarily written in 2019 when we sold a different Module leather chair.)
Certainly one of the most comfortable lounge chairs to ever come out of Australia, these chairs by Australian company, Module International, get a tick for every box. Made in the 1970’s, these chairs were inspired by the famous Falcon chair that came out of Norway a few years before. These chairs were most likely designed by Gerald Easden, who was the leading Australian furniture designer of the 1970’s and winner of 23 Design Awards. Easden was head-designer at Module International at the time these chairs were released so they were very likely designed by him.
Nearly all the chairs in this design were made in black leather or other dark colours which makes the chair look a little chunky for my liking (because there’s a lot of padding). This particular pair is able to combine the extra comfort from this padding with the minimalist flavour these 1970’s designs are famous for. The camel-coloured leather is perfect for this chair- it’s warm, earthy but pares back the look of all the cushioning to ensure the minimalist style is not compromised.
The comfort of this pair is obviously special but the durability is what really won me over. These chairs are now about 45 years old- look at them after all these years of use! No guessing the quality of the leather here! Yes- there are cheap shitty leathers on furniture all over the place these days- but this is thick (vintage), FULL-GRAIN LEATHER- the best you can get and rarely used anymore except in high-end pieces worth much more than this! And your proof of the quality on offer here is in the condition of these chairs after all these years of use.
The other thing these have going for them is very SOLID investment appeal. They couldn’t make a chair of this quality for anywhere near this price these days but these are 1970’s pieces (with strong design provenance too). At this price there’s no reason why they shouldn’t continue to increase in value in the future- if you look after them with some sense. They are undervalued here so I think will increase in value beyond that of inflation in coming years. This design is timeless, stylish and appeals to a wide cross-section of the market. The style is based on Sigurd Resell’s, famous Falcon chair (by Norwegian company, Vatne Mobler). Falcon chairs are currently fetching up to AU $2950 EACH in some vintage Melbourne shops. This chair is just as good in my eyes but listed here at less than ONE THIRD the price of a Falcon. (It’s at least as rare as the Falcon chair too- actually to be honest it’s even rarer!)
Like the Falcon chair, this chair also has a canvas sling that’s supported on a curved timber frame. The frame on this one is stronger than a Falcon chair as well (because it has a metal sub-structure). This vintage chair swivels as well which I think adds to the appeal of the design- Falcon chairs don’t swivel.
Investing in quality vintage furniture is a great way to go. If an Australian company made these again today, you’d be set back about $3,000 per chair but seeing first-hand how something has held up over the years verifies how smart your investment is (before you shell out a cent for it). I have no doubt this vintage Module chair will be passed onto future generations- a symbol that when something has been done well, it will live on. There’s no better way I can think of to invest in your home, reduce landfill and your carbon footprint.
In the same league as Artek, Anibou, Westnofa, Tessa, Parker, FLER and Danish Deluxe pieces.
