Our listed price is for ONE chair but we have a matching pair available. One chair is very slightly different to the other (read ALL of the description please)!
These chairs are being SOLD UNDER CONSIGNMENT by a private seller in ADELAIDE. These chairs can be freighted Australia-wide. It’d cost about $200 to get this pair to Melbourne.
Price for the “perfect” chair- $990. Price for the chair that sits lower to the floor- $770. (This chair was made that way. It’s NOT damage! I believe this was one of the first ever made by Module Furniture and they used this chair to later tweaked the design).
Our vendors told me they purchased these chairs new in 1974. (These chairs have had one owner only! Their family has used and loved these 47 years!) Let’s just ponder that for a moment. This family has already got a lifetime of use out of this AUSTRALIAN-MADE furniture and now it’s ready to passed onto a new generation with absolutely NO RESTORATION NEEDED at all (just a minor clean-up and a leather condition was all that was needed).
Provenance and Background Info
(This description was primarily written in 2019 when I sold a different Module leather chair and was later updated in 2021.)
This might well be the most comfortable chair to ever come out of Australia! If I needed another chair, I’d want it for myself. You just melt into this one. Chairs in this type of design tend to have little padding (they don’t need it because the angles and “give” in the seating-sling is what creates a really comfortable chair). The extra padding on this chair makes it simply divine. It just seems to just hug you.
We’ve had a few of these chairs in the past (they are popular and our past ones have all sold quickly). These are the first in this design we’ve had that have the original vintage Module labels. Plus there’s also the vintage Howe Leather label there from the 1970’s as well.
Most Module chairs in this design have an upholstered armrest section- in dark colours this makes the design a little chunky for my liking (because of all the extra padding). This particular design is able to combine the extra comfort from the padding with the sleek minimalist flavour these 1970’s designs are famous for. The black leather is “neutral” and makes for a really stunning look!
The comfort is obviously special but the durability is what really won me over. These chairs are now over 45 years old- look at them after all these years of use! No guessing the quality of the leather on offer here! Yes- there are cheap shitty leathers on furniture all over the place these days- but this is VINTAGE HOWE LEATHER, some of the best leather ever made (not only in Australia but the world). I personally like it more than Italian leathers. This is thick, FULL-GRAIN LEATHER- the best you can buy and rarely used anymore except in high-end pieces priced at a lot more than this. And your proof of the quality on offer here is in the condition of these chairs after all these years of use. (I’ve recently uploaded a vintage Howe Leather pamphlet to the iNVISeDGE website. Go to our CONSCIOUS CONSUMING section to find this pamphlet for detailed information about furniture leather, the differences in the quality of leather types and “howe” to care for leather furniture so you get another 40+ years use out of your vintage leather furniture.)
The other thing this design has going for it is very SOLID investment appeal. They couldn’t make a chair of this quality for anywhere near this price these days but these chairs are 47 years old (with strong design provenance too). At this price there’s no reason why this chair shouldn’t continue to increase in value in the future- if you look after it with some sense. This design is timeless, stylish and appeals to a wide cross-section of the market. It’s based on Sigurd Resell’s famous Falcon chair (by Norwegian company, Vatne Mobler). Falcon chairs are currently fetching up to AU $2800 EACH without the footstool in some vintage Melbourne shops. This chair is just as good in my eyes but listed here at less than HALF the price of a Falcon. (It’s at least as rare as the Falcon chair too- actually to be honest it’s rarer!)
Like the Falcon chair, this chair also has a canvas sling that’s supported on a curved timber frame. The frame on this one is stronger than a Falcon chair as well (this design has a metal sub-structure). This vintage chair swivels as well which I think adds to the appeal of the design- Falcon chairs don’t swivel.
Buying quality vintage furniture is a great way to go. If an Australian company made these again today, you’d be set back about $3000 PER CHAIR but seeing first-hand how something has held up over the years verifies how smart your investment is (before you shell out a cent for it). I have no doubt this vintage Module chair will be passed onto future generations- a symbol that when something has been done well, it will live on. There’s no better way I can think of to invest in your home, reduce landfill, reduce your carbon footprint and support local small business.
This chair is in the same league as Artek, Anibou, Westnofa, Tessa, Parker, FLER and Danish Deluxe pieces.
IMPORTANT NOTE- I get the feeling that one of these chairs was one of the first ever made in this design. The angles are different compared to the other. One chair sits lower to the floor and the seat is at a slightly different angle too. In comparison to other chairs it’s comfort is still extremely good, however the comfort of the other one is perfect in my opinion. You’re higher off the floor on the other- the angles have also been tweaked and improved slightly. If you look closely at the photo of them side by side, you’ll see that the chair that sits lower to the floor has a different timber base (it looks very similar but where it branches out, the timber sits flatter along the floor making the stem section shorter.) Read ALL of the Condition and Dimensions section for further information about this special pair.
