Background Info and Provenance
A VINTAGE Kosta vase engraved to the base ( SS 172 ) by Mona Morales-Schildt. SS is the Kosta designer code for Mona Morales-Schildt cut glass/crystal pieces. This piece was designed in the late 1950’s. It forms part of the Ventana series (which means “window” in Italian) which she is best known for. This design has solid international investment appeal. There is currently one of these exact pieces on-line in modernity (in Sweden) for $1420US. There are a few others I’ve found around the world- they usually fetch $900-$1100 by experienced dealers. There is currently one online from domino antic in Europe (Sweden?) for $983US (approx AU$1250). There are similar Morales-Schildt designs that don’t have the pronounced concave surfaces- they are less sophisticated and not as highly valued- this design is at the top of the line.
In my opinion this is the most exciting decorative arts piece I’ve had. It’s a rare piece of history by a highly- esteemed artist and there’s something about vintage Kosta (Boda) I can’t go past. The piece itself is intriguing. At the time this was ground-breaking stuff- today it still gets noticed. It’s technically very precise, almost mathematical in a way with the proportion of convex and concave faces. But there’s so much more than geometry at work. There’s something very creative about the “flow” of the piece- I love the seamless blending of the calculated with the creative spark. Morales-Schildt is highly esteemed by dealers and collectors. The dealer in Europe who put US$1420 on this design is highly-regarded and experienced. This is a stand-alone piece- it doesn’t need anything around it to prop it up and for that reason (and the complexity of the work involved) it fetches more than a lot of mid-century glass. Sometimes less really is more.
In Australia, this is worth a lot more. I’ve never seen one on offer in Australia and I visit the mid-century design shops in Sydney when I’m there. I have priced the piece to sell so I can buy the next inspiring thing.
This piece is signed with SS 172. Many of these are signed, “Kosta SS 172” but in my study I have come across various Kosta designs with the design number only. This is because there was a vinyl Kosta label also used on items. Amongst everything else the “chicken scratch” style of the engraving to the base is spot-on- I’ve seen this rather rudimentary “scratching” on various Kosta pieces of the early 1960’s including Vicke Lindstrand’s and of course many in this design as well.
HAND-MADE art that’s European and over 50 years old is virtually never found in Australia. It is my understanding that the “chicken scratch” signature denotes the piece is an earlier version. I’ve seen this style signature on various Kosta pieces (some by other Kosta designers) made in the early 1960’s. This piece is one to be passed from one generation to the next. The design captivates just as much today as it did back then. Instead of adding to global pollution consider buying vintage- there are very few better ways you can invest in your home and the future of our planet.
2002 and 2006
This vintage piece is in excellent condition for its age with no damage to report at all. NO cracks, NO chips, NO noticeable damage. The piece has a couple of minor signs of use but nothing that’s noticed. The base is spot on for these- signature is right, it’s in the right spot and appropriate base wear for its age. This item has a height of about 16cm and measures 11cm across at its widest. Read my 1100+ feedback comments (ALL for vintage design SALES). This is your guarantee that I strive to describe all my items as accurately as I can and I will not stock items unless they are in excellent condition.
PICK-UP . . . from 30 or 40 minutes North of BRISBANE city is accepted but postage is preferred as my home is hard to find. Pick-up in person must be worked out prior to purchase- thank you. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ POSTAGE is offered internationally. All our Decorative Arts pieces are delivered through AUSTRALIA POST. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ POSTAGE ESTIMATES. . . . ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ To BRISBANE- most of our pieces cost $15 - $18 to send. . . To SYDNEY or MELBOURNE- Small Vase- around $20 - $23, Medium Vase- around $20 - $25, Large Vase- around $24 - $30. Let us know if you need an EXACT COST for postage prior to purchase. The above postage estimates include $2.95 for a signature on delivery. . . INSURANCE against being lost or broken in transit up to the value of $200 is included in the estimates above. If your vase is cheaper or more expensive than $200 this will effect your postage fee slightly. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A BOXING FEE of $3.00 is included in the fee above to cover the cost of searching for and storing used packing materials. With the millions of cardboard boxes that end up as landfill every year we don’t believe in supporting the manufacture of boxes for post. Instead of buying new boxes and packing materials and passing this cost onto our customers we spend considerable time sourcing used boxes and then fashioning boxes to fit each item. We do the same for bubble-wrap and foam pieces. This requires a large investment of time, energy, ingenuity, organization and storage space- it is much easier and cheaper to buy new packing materials but I can’t justify taking the easy way out when so much packing material ends up polluting our earth. Our $3.00 charge does little to pay for the time (and storage) needed do this and to pack your item (there is also the time needed to get your package to the post office). This is something we’re happy to do for our customers and the environment. We appreciate your support in this area.
