Provenance and Background Info
A Moran Norwegian designer leather chair- the MATCHING FOOTSTOOL is also available. This ensemble is similar to the Norwegian Falcon chair from the early 1970’s. The Falcon chair is probably the most famous design to come out of the 1970’s and has won a swarm of awards over the years. The Falcon chair is, in my opinion, the best feature chair design ever- it’s just my opinion but I’ve come across millions of different furniture designs in this job. This chair by Danish designer Odd Knutsen (and produced by Hjellegjerde- Norway) in the higher-backed version is on par with the Falcon. It’s a fascinating piece of design that ticks every box.
I’ve seen this design only once before and that was 10 years ago when I sold this exact chair along with a pair in the lower-backed version. (The buyer of this chair 10 years ago came back to me when it was time to sell.) This design was imported into Australia by Moran Leather (Australia). Moran has been a staple in quality furniture for the past 50 years. Moran built its reputation on comfort and quality and these chairs continue that legacy. These chairs were retailed by MYER in Australia about 18 years ago. (The lower-backed pair I sold back in 2014 had 04/06 on them underneath- April 2006.) They were expensive back in the day so not many were sold- there’s very few around.
The last time I had this design back in 2014, they got more “hits” than any other item in my store at the time and attracted freight price enquiries from Israel, Germany and USA. I have not come across this design since so it’s unlikely you’ll ever see another.
The stunning looks of this chair are obvious but the premium quality is just as wonderful and the comfort … wow! This is just as comfortable as the Falcon chair! It’s like sinking into a padded baseball glove and the angles are just perfect … zzzzzzzz. This design has more padding than the Falcon chair and in that way it tops the Falcon. You just melt into this chair and there’s nothing like the luxury of full bovine leather.
What’s interesting is that after a bit of digging online, I discovered this design was first done in 1970 (even before the Falcon chair). After seeing the success of the Falcon, Moran must have introduced this design to the Australian market about 10 years ago as it was never sold in Australia prior. One of the lower-backed chairs (that I sold 10 years ago) had Hjellegjerde printed on the label which means they must have been made under license.
Most leather feature chairs in Myer currently sell for thousands- you can’t buy this design anymore which makes it all the more special.
Pricing this was difficult. Falcon chairs are being made again in Norway- a new chair and footstool are currently selling in Australia for around $8,000. Vintage high-back versions with the matching footstool are often priced at around $4,000 in Melbourne. The price I’ve set here gives the lucky buyer a no-brainer INVESTMENT. You can spend $10,000 or more on a feature chair and footstool from SPACE furniture. At this price, I can’t see this ensemble ever losing any value.
This ensemble is about 18 years old and presents extremely well thanks to the premium quality. Buying furniture that has already stood the test of time is a smart way to buy. The quality of furniture shows itself quickly these days. There’s no better way to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
