Background Info and Provenance

An incredible Mother of Pearl shell lamp from the 1950’s. I have 2 of these lamps at home and love them! I got my first one about 5 years ago and I love it more today than I did when I first got it.

These stunning shells have been converted into a lamp. (The shells are both real). This piece is both earthy and natural but also clamorous at the same time. Mother of Pearl is highly-prized and is said to attract fortune and happiness. It can also be especially useful for handling and calming emotional situations. Having it nearby when working through an emotional situation is said to promote cooperation. Abalone (Mother of Pearl) is reported by intuitive sources to stimulate psychic development and intuition. It can strengthen the immune system, muscle tissues and the heart. It is helpful for arthritis and joint disorders. It can help with allergies, rashes and skin complaints.

This lamp is not only stunning to look at but also good to have around for your health. The Mother of Pearl shell alone is worth good money but the skill and time needed to fashion these elements into a lamp also enhances the investment appeal of this piece. This lamp has been professionally assembled and is very well made.

There are not many shell lamps around- I’ve seen very few made with Mother of Pearl. Most tend to have smaller Mother of Pearl shells and they’re “padded out” with coral and the likes which I think detracts from the pearlescent shimmer. It’s my understanding that most (all?) were done in the 1950’s (or late 1940’s).

After many modern pieces have lost favour and ended up as landfill this vintage piece only becomes more prized as it gets passed onto each new generation. (There’s also no more a perennial designer than Mother Nature herself so this one will never go out of style.) There are very few better ways to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint.
