Provenance and Background Info
THIS TABLE SOLD IMMEDIATELY THROUGH iNVISeDGE FOR $1450 back in 2011. These days in 2018 I’d price the exact same table at about $1650. Today in 2018 I haven’t seen a table like this ever since (7 years later).
A SOLID TIMBER dining table that extends to a total length of 240cm (which is large for a dining table). This is a great size for the majority of homes and very versatile. It seats 6 in its unextended mode and 10 when extended (you could probably get 12 chairs in there as well I’d say- see the photos). I’d say this is the best quality dining table I’ve had in the 10 years I’ve been in business. It’s all SOLID TIMBER. This piece is so heavy and big we were unable to photograph it in our photographic area. The photos don’t quite do the piece justice but certainly showcase the beautiful colouring of the timbers used. This piece was crafted by Neil Grice Furniture of Milton, Brisbane back in 1981. This would have been some of the most exclusive furniture in Brisbane back in the early 80’s. The man I bought it from paid over $1300 for the table back then. In today’s values this would be about $3300 but it’s impossible to buy something like this anymore- if made in Australia today using the same types of timbers and same construction technique it’d fetch more than $5000- if made by one of the heavyweights such as Mark Tuckey it’d fetch about $10 000. This piece has a fascinating designer edge with its use of slender timber panels running horizontally. There are several timber types used in this piece- one appears to be quite unusual (there is possibly a Queensland rainforest timber used but I’m not sure- it’s not a timber I regularly come across). The timber resembles burning flames from some angles making it stunning. I like the boldness of the design and how the leg section is set well under the table so a variety of chairs configurations would work with the piece. The chairs would need to also be bold (see the photos) or contrast with sleek and minimalist such as white and chrome designer chairs.
This piece is incredibly durable. There is NO use of veneer (or bloody chipboard!) in the entire piece- it’s ALL SOLID HARDWOOD. This makes restoration of the table at any time easy. This piece will be passed through the generations telling more stories as it goes. The elderly man I bought it from had a swarm of stories to tell- it was incredible that a table his family loved for 30 years could be just cleaned up and look this amazing. This is why many people are turning back to vintage furniture- they can be assured of the quality they’re getting. There’s no better way to invest in your home and reduce landfill. THIS LISTING PRICE IS FOR THE TABLE ONLY!
