Background Information and Provenance

An art glass vase made BY HAND by one of Europe most celebrated art glass factories, Orrefors. This is a really rare piece. I love the opalescent effect- it glows and the feathering is stunning. It has a free-flowing, expressive essence but also shows a very high level of technical skill.

Orrefors Glassworks was founded in 1889 and for over 130 years, has provided the world with some of the most inspiring art glass ever seen. Many of the most exclusive and collectable glass pieces come from the Orrefors glassworks in Sweden. Some Orrefors Ariel / Graal vases by the likes of Edvin Ohrstrom, Simon Gate, Eva Hoglund and Sven Palmqvist are worth well over AU $10 000. I’ve seen several for over AU $25 000.

This opalescent piece is certainly RARE. I’ve seen only one photo of this design online- on a high-end mid-century website in Europe in their sold inventory. I decided to trawl the world for another and even went through every Orrefors glass listing on ebay at the time (worldwide)- ALL 5000! There are NONE others of these for sale at all and I doubt another will be seen in Australia again. That’s about as good an investment as you’ll ever get.

Orrefors is one of the leading companies in the Scandinavian Modernism movement (along with Kosta Boda) and is revered by collectors for the fine craftsmanship and innovation of its stunning art glass. When others have lost favour and ended up as landfill this vintage HAND-MADE piece (that I guess is about 40 years old) will be passed onto another generation, a symbol that when something has been done well with creativity, thought and by the hands of PEOPLE (and not machines) it will live in. There are few better ways to invest in your home and reduce your carbon footprint.
