ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR SET OF CHAIRS

This is the “Messina” design which was introduced by Pacific Green Furniture about 45 years ago. This pair of chairs is about 35 years old. BOTH chairs present EXTREMELY WELL. Supreme sitting comfort and pure luxury, this suite is in a league of it’s own. Just look at the shapes! Cylindrical Palmwood trunks for legs; sleek, minimalist armrests- this has a unique, designer aesthetic. Don’t miss this suite- the reserve price is about ONE QUARTER retail. I doubt you’ll ever find another of these suites at this price again. There are some shops in Australia selling vintage (Made in Fiji) Pacific Green suites for MORE than the new retail price.

I have also recently become a salesperson for NEW Pacific Green Furniture in Brisbane (message me if you’re in the Gold Coast, Brisbane or the Sunshine Coast and you’d like new Pacific Green Furniture for the best prices you can get in Australia.) The leather is pure luxury- definitely some of the best leather I’ve ever come across. The construction is just awesome too! This furniture is built to last FOREVER (not just one or two generations). It has a steel sub-structure and the timber pieces are joined onto a SOLID STEEL frame- just incredible stuff! You won’t find a more inspiring lounge suite again- particularly in this price range. I’ve also shown a photo below of the inside of one leg- the Palmwood trunks have been hollowed out and some of the steel sub-structure is housed (hidden) in these hollowed-out tree trunks. Love this design! Particularly in these lighter tones. It means that the shape of the frame takes focus and not the colour of the leather.

Background Info about Pacific Green

(Mainly written in 2016 but updated in 2025.)

An exceptional quality PAIR of Messina lounge chairs, HAND-CRAFTED by highly-awarded company, PACIFIC GREEN. (The matching pair of armchairs are priced SEPARATELY.) Pacific Green Furniture is at the top in my eyes- they offer it all and have their own original style others wouldn’t even try to copy. This is one of the best lounge suites to come through iNVISeDGE for some time. LOVE it! Pacific Green has taken resort furniture to a whole new level here. The design has such a distinct tropical-island feel to it and make no mistake … this is COMMERCIAL-GRADE furniture. It hasn’t been built to last one or two generations- Pacific Green is making stuff that I believe will last FOREVER. Look at the metal sub-structure here! You won’t see anything like it in virtually any of the furniture out there today. Plus the leather on this suite is exceptional- this is proper FULL-GRAIN leather from the 1980’s.

And this brings me to my last point about this particular sofa. This sofa is the best Messina design Pacific Green ever did. It was made about 45 years ago. The Messina design (like many PG designs) was tinkered with over the years. The earliest ones are pretty ugly and have exposed black metal bars running across the backs- these pieces don’t!

With these there’s a nice curve in the backs and the angles are all brilliant for seating comfort. The seat slants back and there’s a nice angle to the backs as well- the cushioning has a nice level of sponginess but is still pretty firm- these chairs hold you in a perfect seating position.

The Messina has been a “mainstay” for Pacific Green- they’re still selling the 2.5-seater sofas today for $6,690 new. Ours is a mere fraction of that and in BRILLIANT condition- this suite presents extremely well. I’ve even seen a pair of second-hand Messina chairs sell in America for MORE than the new price here in Australia! The investment appeal on offer here is a no-brainer (ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THAT ONE OF THESE ARMCHAIRS HAS A MADE IN FIJI LABEL UNDERNEATH)- in my eyes the value of VINTAGE (c.1980’s) Pacific Green suites should only go up in the future. In the right home, this sofa would look incredible but is also warm and inviting- not clinical looking like most designer furniture. Plus the armrests are perfect to rest your drink on! (Use coasters though please…. (okay, yesss Mum …)

Pacific Green originated from the Post & Rail brand which started in Sydney in the 1970’s and is heralded for its construction quality. Post & Rail grew into an international brand and in the late-1980’s they did the unthinkable. With a highly successful brand they changed tack completely. With the world’s new concern with deforestation and ecological threats, Post & Rail closed and re-branded as Pacific Green. Pacific Green searched the world for a sustainable quality timber for their future furniture production- the solution? Coconut wood. In the South Pacific, they found vast abandoned plantations of coconut palm trees, which were commercially planted in the early-1900s but had reached the end of productive fruiting. The best part? Coconut wood is a HARD-WOOD that’s more resilient than virtually any timber. It thrives in areas battered by tropical cyclones.

After I’d found out that, I not only wanted the suite I’d found but wanted to start stocking new Pacific Green furniture in iNVISeDGE (which would be a first for us because we currently sell only pre-loved furniture). But there’s more. Pacific Green set a benchmark for modern, sustainable business in the Pacific. In the late-1980’s land was leased, not bought, to respect indigenous ownership. Their factory was built in consultation with surrounding villages and employed only local people. Business and skills training programmes were established. The factories in Fiji are owned by Fijians- the drive is still Australian- the designing arm and retailing strategy happens here in Australia.

Pacific Green today has grown from that little furniture-making firm that started in the Rocks, Sydney back in 1973 (as Post & Rail). I am inspired and heartened they changed tack back in the late-1980’s when ecological threats were barely thought of. I can write nothing critical about these chairs or Pacific Green so I am now a salesman for new Pacific Green Furniture (this is a first for iNVISeDGE).

The quality is exceptional and the construction sooooo DURABLE (all made BY HAND)- the leather- luxurious, the looks- exceptional AND timeless, the investment appeal- exceptional, the comfort- brilliant. The Americans are going gaga over Pacific Green at the moment and they’re paying a lot more for it than us. Pacific Green is really coming into its own.

The best thing about Pacific Green Furniture is the inspiration it evokes- Pacific Green ticks every box and proves that businesses can be successful, ecologically-responsible and socially aware. This lounge suite has been built to last generations and will continue to tell stories for centuries to come (probably forever)- Pacific Green furniture will be the antiques of tomorrow. There’s no better way to invest in your home and reduce landfill.
