A vintage pair of teak Narvik chairs produced by FLER in the early 1960’s. This is one of Australia’s best adaptions of a Danish design ever. This design has a beautiful sculptural elegance often seen in Danish furniture but is still different to the Danish chairs I’ve come across. The best Parker designs from the 60’s are stylish and beautiful but I think the Narvik design by FLER is the best. I haven’t been able to stock this design since 2006! (They’re just too hard to get these days- they’ve risen in value an incredible amount since 2006 and because they’re at the pinnacle they will continue to do so as well.) One of these chairs has the S1 Furniture Guild sticker used by FLER in the early 1960’s- this label cements the vintage of this pair and investment appeal. I can’t see the FLER Narvik pieces losing any value in the future. The quality is certainly up there- look at these after about 55 years of use- incredible! Even the fabric on this pair is original and in brilliant condition for chairs of this age. The oatmeal tone is neutral and easy to work into any home. But if you ever need a change in the future re-upholstery is a breeze. Simply take the existing cushions with new fabric to anyone who knows how to sew (the inner foam has been updated at some stage so is still in great condition). Re-upholstery is not a hard job or costly- in taupe or charcoal these chairs would look just as good but with a different twist.
And I almost forgot. The comfort of FLER Narvik chairs is great. The angles are brilliant for comfort (the back AND seat section are both slanted back slightly to give your back muscles full relaxation). Plus the taller back on these supports the full body in the best way a chair can. There’s also softness in the comfort- the cushions have a nice plushness to them and the seat has springs for added relaxation.
Investing in vintage items such as FLER Narvik lounges is a great way to go. When chairs look like this after more than 50 or so years of use you’re guaranteed of the quality and durability you’re buying. There are very few better ways to invest in your home. Also by valuing and recycling vintage design you’re helping to reduce landfill thus protecting our environment.
